...A deal which will be constructed in a way that ensures nobody is actually sent there. Also, it smacks of the Madagascar Plan, which is worth Googling.

I've actually reached the point where I'm embarrassed and ashamed to live in this country now - if anyone wants to downvote this comment or throw in a reply along the lines of "Well, if you hate this country so much, why don't you move somewhere else?" please feel free, as only having one member on my ignore list is getting a bit boring...

Indeed. Are they really going to pay to send them all the way out there and then (in theory) bring them back again? Plus escorts and basing staff in the country to handle arrivals? Not to mention the carbon footprint.

Operation distraction on 07:44 - Apr 14 with 1665 views | DanTheMan | Apparently this is going to cost at least £120million. So even if we ignore all the other obvious moral questions here, surely this isn't even value for money? Seems like an insane solution. Why Rwanda too? It's not exactly known for it's stellar human rights record, although maybe that is the point.

Aside from the inherent, gratuitous cruelty of it all, it doesn't work as the Australian scheme shows and also Israel doing the same with Rwanda. Thread here:

That's the cost of the trial. If implemented it's estimated to be £1.4bn. It's all part of the humiliation from realising that Brexit has done nothing to enhance our Border security. Which was obvious at the time but the same people who voted for Brexit will be the same people who will lap this up, defend Boris after the weekly scandals and turn a blind eye to anything because they know the Tories won't put tax up unless we are on the verge of bankruptcy. There is audible hate for Boris and the Tories. However, I'm not convinced that the Home Counties, agri, middle class hoards that sit in safe generational Tory seats are going to change their minds any time soon. They will quietly vote Tory to the outrage of the louder labour voters and it will be BAU for another 4 years under another Dunning Kruger populist. [Post edited 14 Apr 2022 8:28]

It's very in keeping with their MO, especially as the pressure from their own arrogance is mounting. Surely there must be a sense that the massive majority they were gifted is at risk. Imagine being the type of person this plays well to, it's staggering how backward our collective sense of decency is slipping. The fact they can afford to lose so much in COVID fraud but can't fund public services is the worst of it. The very reason people fall for this is the damage done by austerity and decades of Tory rule.

It's the Tory playbook. Outsource via ridiculous contracts. If it goes wrong blame the outsource, if it goes well take the credit. Either way we foot the bill. The concept of privatisation is at least driven by tax payer efficiency, this is just admitting we aren't up to managing it.

This is one of the worst ideas any government has come up with, ever. The cost alone seems like a huge waste of tax payer money, add to that the inhumanity of it. This does have Priti Patel bolt of inspiration written all over it

Operation distraction on 11:02 - Apr 14 with 1256 views | DanTheMan | Looks like we're getting a bit more detail now which has left me even more confused. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-61097114 Under the proposal, Rwanda would take responsibility for the people who make the more than 4,000 mile journey, put them through an asylum process, and at the end of that process, if they are successful, they will have long-term accommodation in Rwanda. The BBC has seen accommodation the asylum seekers will be housed in, thought to have enough space for around 100 people at a time and to process up to 500 a year. Nearly 29,000 migrants crossed the Channel in 2021. Am I reading this wrong, we're getting asylum seekers here, shipping them to Rwanda and then, if they are successful, they'll be rehomed in Rwanda?

we'll have a month of parliamentary posturing, the trial will involve a couple of dozen people, and then we'll never hear of it again. it will be "mostly single men the British authorities believe are inadmissible" - if the government's lawyers can't see where "believe are inadmissible" will end up the government needs new lawyers.
| And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show |

To your last point yes. We are basically sending the 'problem' as Patel sees it to another country and paying them to do so. A trade in humans if you like...
