We don’t have the best squad in the league 08:40 - Dec 16 with 1073 viewsStewards_Enquiry

We have overpaid over hyped players that need to have a long hard look at themselves. You don’t get wins because you were good, you get wins if you are good

Still trying to get over last night and the lack of anything from that eleven

When you look at what the likes of Fraser, Pigott, Chaplin did last season, they came here with a very good track record.

Walton and Edmondson are amongst the best in the positions in L1.

Celina would get in any side.

We have a very, very strong squad which is vastly under performing.

Who knows why though?

They haven't had any coaches with any experience of coaching first team football for 9 months, so that may contribute.

I agree. We cannot go back down the route of 'the squad isn't good enough' again. I think there are a few areas in January that need addressing, simply for balance.

I think you have to put the results and performances down to poor organisation and coaching. As you say, plenty of the players came here with a good track record. We need someone in ASAP to get us back to basics and churning out some results. We have enough quality to win us games.

The squad is unbalanced. Bloated in attack and famine in defense,

I don't think our players are bad, but the cohesion is shot. When you cant trust your defenders to not ship stupid goals, surely at strikers you begin to feel jaded when you're busting a gut.

If we sign a strong LB and another quality CB and have Burns back - I bet this squad will come alive.

Agreed.

The recruitment in the summer did seem to lack any strategy.

The squad is very, very strong on paper for this level. Unfortunately they haven't been shaped into anything close to an effective team that is equal to or greater than the sum of its parts.

Lack of organisation. Tactical inflexibility (I know there has been since Cook left, but they've had just 11 days, including three away games, to get used to a new way of operating).

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I cringed when Ashton came out with this line a few weeks ago.

Rotherham United

Not just for league position, but also the way they played against us. Well Oiled, Well Drilled.

Exactly, they are well drilled and organised. The basics. Take any of their players and drop into out team they would look lost. Even Crooks would probably be deemed a failure now had he joined. We just need a man to come in and get back to basics.

Also think a lot of players believed the hype they were over sold. "Big club" "best squad" "big plans" "the project" blah blah blah. We are a club full of words and have forgotten to the need to roll-up the sleeves and work.

I think it's hard to judge the quality of individuals when we're so collectively poor.

Off the ball - if you don't press with a plan and a purpose, then you'll get passed through quite easily, even if all 11 players are working hard, even if lots of them tackle well.

On the ball - if you don't have drilled good, consistent ways of moving through the opposition, getting quality possession in the opposition's final third, no individual is going to have much chance to shine.

In the final third - if you've not worked out of any patterns of play that consistently make you a threat, collectively, then everyone's going to look like garbage (and more so, because they'll snatch at the rare glimpses they do get).

'if you don't press with a plan and a purpose, then you'll get passed through quite easily'

This is the perfect summary of our team at the moment. We are so easily bypassed with simple football that it puts too much pressure on the back line.

We need to make ourselves hard to beat first and foremost as at the moment, teams (regardless of their position or quality) cut through us like a knife through butter.

First half, ours and Barrow's off-the-ball work was night and day, it really was.

Classic example of this last night - three of our players pressed the Barrow guy in possession, but not closely enough, and not blocking any passes, so that even as the guy was falling over, he still had the chance to play the ball out to the guy on the wing, who was effectively free to run down the line and cross the ball....

Just one small problem; sell their houses to who, Ben? Fcking Aquaman?

Football is a meritocracy in reality, and we have something like 20 players that earn more than Rotherham's highest paid player.

It's obviously not as simple as that, as we are proving, but if Rotherham were able to extract the value that they are currently doing with the budget we have they'd be at the very least pushing for the Premier League

lm with you. They arnt the best squad, nowhere near. Highest paid yes. Biggest egos, probably because of the money, but team, no, pretty awful.
Sam Morsey is probably the worst captain we have ever had. Every interview he does he basically says he didnt want to come to the club. Well he would be the first out in January if he doesnt show any effort or desire(collecting a yellow card every game doesnt prove he is commited either).
