The entire 62 league winning team should have been recognised. That will NEVER be bettered. Holland a very overrated player like Skuse and Chambers are today, can't believe he's number 2. Again, I suppose no fans under 40 really saw a decent Town team. Trevor Whymark deserved a higher place too in my opinion.

Ironically, I've seen us play worse than that against Rotherham alone three times under Lambert.

I’ve seen two of those but that was singularly the worst game of football I’ve ever seen. We were admittedly bad in the others but at least Rotherham actually played well enough to deserve to win in those. The one I’m thinking of they played like a pubs reserve team and we were worse.

This was my list, bar one player!
Chose Paul Cooper over Arnold Muhren.

Didn't Cooper save 5 penalties in a row?

Think you're over-egging it. He was far from excellent for a good chunk of those 7 seasons and as a manager he was pretty mediocre in the round. He looks better in hindsight given some of the dross we've had since but I'd not have him near my twelve.

For me each of the 12 should have two characteristics:
1) A lot of appearances
2) Contributing to a special moment in our history

For this reason I think we have 11 of the 12 pretty spot on:

John Wark - 678 appearances, 190 goals, FA Cup and UEFA

Matt Holland - 314 appearances, Play off winning captain, Captain of Fifth in Prem

Mick Mills - 741 appearances, FA Cup, UEFA, England captain whilst a Town player

Terry Butcher - 350 appearances, UEFA Cup, England captain whilst a Town player

Paul Mariner - 339 appearances, 135 goals, FA Cup, UEFA Cup, England caps whilst at Town

Kevin Beattie - 307 appearances (should have been many more), FA Cup, England caps whilst at Town, Arguably our finest ever player

George Burley - 500 appearances, FA Cup, successful manager, many Scottish caps whilst at Town

Ray Crawford - 354 appearances, 218 goals, League winner

Arnold Muhren - 214 appearances, UEFA Cup

Frans Thijssen - 170 appearances, UEFA Cup

Jim Magilton - 322 appearances, Play-off winner, Play-off semi legend, Managed the club

That leaves an odd one out: Marcus Stewart, love love him, but he only played 75 times. That's the same number of appearances as Lewis Price and only a couple more than Wickham. I'd also add Taricco to the list because he wasn't part of a team that achieved anything (see Chambers also).

The 1992 Second Division winning team are not that well represented and you could easily argue their achievement was better than the 99/00 play-off winners - although they didn't follow up promotion with a Top 5 finish. Players like Yallop, Milton, Stockwell and Forrest all racked up 300+ games and were part of that team.

When it comes down to it I can't argue with 11 of the 12, but think that Stockwell, Cooper, Elsworthy, Osman, Gates and Leadbetter all have a stronger claim that Stewart. But the biggest omission surely has to be Ted Phillips. 295 appearances, 181 goals, ten years service and part of the joint most unlikely top division winners (along with Leicester).

Mickey Stockwell should be in there, not sure any town player in history covered more of the hallowed turf than him. A bollard would probably suffice though.

Maybe a panel should have been put in place to decide on this instead of fans? Ex players, journalists, TWTD, etc. Beattie should have been omitted as he is already going to be recognised. Players like Stocky, Brazil, Ted really ought to be in there somewhere. I suppose we should really be proud that we have so many great players, that picking 12 is near on impossible.
