Does anyone else just find capitalism in general massively depressing? 09:26 - Oct 22 with 14685 viewsmonytowbray

At first having a good job was nice, disposable income after years of cr@p jobs. But 8 years of it, watching incompetent people with capital get rich off building teams of skilled people and then flogging it to an early retirement, realising you're just a pawn in a system that rewards privilege more than hard work, dealing with people who think life is nothing but the numbers on an ATM screen and define self worth/motivation. It's really starting to drain me on the inside. The stress and internal office politics on top of that also.

I've always judged life by how happy I am rather than what's in my pocket. I'm doing better financially than ever and honestly I don't think I've ever felt so jaded, miserable and defeated by life. Like I'm trotting along on a train where I don't fit in and heading somewhere I'm really MEH about getting there.

Am I alone in thinking this? I feel like a lot of my close friends align but a lot of them are hippies and punks who are fairly fulfilled in live living the minimalist way with a socialist outlook and rejecting social norms. But is this something the wider world of "normies" also suffer from?

I don’t mind my job. If I didn’t like it I’d get another one, it’s not that hard to find work if you want it. I usually work about 50 hours a week.

I work in recruitment and some of the people we try and find work for - well it beggars belief!

Interesting. Care to share some examples? I often wonder how some people manage to get jobs and how i over stress during that 3 month probation - often what I consider the bare minimum like turning up on time and actually doing my job is considered exceptional.

What was your employer's response when you raised this with them?

To let me go. I was on initial three month probation before getting the job full time. He was the office spoilt brat and if you went against him that was the end of you.

One month review - no one has ever picked the job up this fast, we are very impressed
Two month review - this isn't working, we are going to have to let you go

They then realised the office brat was off the next week and asked if i'd like another week of work which I rejected.

Truly impaired.

Monthly reviews for a three-month probation?! That's bloody strict!

Without telling us who, was this a small business? I've found that some smaller firms can be like the wild west in terms of treating their staff compared to the large organizations I've worked for.

Some of the job roles recruiters send me beggars belief...

"Would you like a demotion to work on a completely different set of technologies than the ones you've listed?"

I hate recruiters. They ask what you want and then send you what they want to fill. One got very stroppy with me because I didn't want to work in a call centre for £14,000 a year.

Very few people seem to realise that quite often the priorities of the recruiter and the goals of the person seeking work are in no way aligned.

Yes, a small company where the directors were impossibly arrogant. I cringed when I heard one of them say "An hour of my time is worth two of anyone else's" on the phone to a company we dealt with.

Well, you can only hope that eventually their incompetence will lead them to failure. Other than that all you can do is move on and thank your lucky stars you didn't get in too deep with such a toxic workplace.

Agree. The incredibly sad thing is that the job I had before that was one I really liked with great people. They wanted to keep my at the end of my 6 month contract but then the Tories came to power and they were expecting funding cuts. They offered me a month by month deal so I left for the 'permanent' job with the other company.

In the previous job I had never been healthier or happier. Funny how life works isn't it?

Well, funnily enough I turned down a job this week for similar reasons. It would have offered a pay rise and more seniority within the organisation, but I just had bad vibes about the position after talking to them. Felt like I was walking into a trap. So said thanks but no thanks and let it pass.

I think people can be overly concerned with creating the impression of being ambitious. There's a lot to be said for recognising that sometimes being happy in what you do and not biting at every opportunity that passes in front of you is one of a few paths to job happiness.

Had a job come through LinkedIn that looked ideal for me. Was quite a substantial payrise, a higher up position in the direction I wanted to go, using new technology in the stuff I do. On the face of it everything looked great.

Then I eventually found out which company it was and had a quick look at Glassdoor. One of the people there:
"Very much opposed to people skills and values. It's all about money, money, money. Great for those who have no morals and ethics"

I think I'm good.

If you already have a job you can tolerate/actually like, then that's a real luxury when looking for your next position. The power to be choosy is a good one to have.

Basically where I am at the moment. Happy where I am but won't turn down something better if it came along.

The only thing I'm missing at my current job is proper progression. There's not a lot of room to "move".

I've been there before, but what made that more tolerable was the fact that there were excellent opportunities available in terms of access to training and professional development. That helped things to never feel stagnant.

Ever thought of retraining to do something less soul-sucking? I jacked in working for a big company with serious advancement prospects(a lad who started there about the same time as me is now MD)at the age of 22 to start nursing, my sister's given up a well-paid London-based job to retrain as an occupational therapist, couple of associates have trained as teachers. There's a fair few more vocational careers out there that'll afford you a living.

It wouldn't necessarily be quick, but it is possible to slowly change your course through things like OU study. Sure it'll take a while, but that time will still pass anyway if you don't do it and you won't be any better off at the end of it.

Mate of mine did it with a mortgage and two teenage kids. There's a LOT of student nurses in the their thirties with young families out there as well. F*ck only knows how they do it, mind.
Mrs Badger is 4 years into an OU degree with a view to looking at teacher training at the end of it.

Also, anyone can be a busy fool, and work long hours and pretend to be busy - no one is in to working smart any more.

I want to watch my children grow up, and be part of it, I know plenty who are too wrapped up in jobs and miss everything. Yes it is unavoidable at times, but sometimes just sitting in the office late becomes an easy option

What industry are you in? Without having read the rest of the thread, surely if you do anything corporate/purely profit driven then this will be largely the reality.

That happens in the tech industry too if you're not careful.

My favourite example was Unidays. As it grew things didn't really change and you end up with this:

Absolutely torpedoed their (at the time) very good standing in the tech community, especially around Nottingham.

I joined a nursing agency a few years back when I was a bit skint and specified the places I was prepared to work in(for ease of travel purposes), the clinical areas I was prepared to work in(for the protection of both me and any patients I might looking after) and also that I would advise THEM of days I was available to work.

There then followed 6 months of near-daily phone calls(sometimes whilst I was AT WORK and often when I was on nights, trying to sleep) with offers to work in obscure specialities that I knew nothing about in places that I wasn't able to travel to and still be able to make it worth my while.

I finally f*cked them off after a phone call at 10 AM following a no-break night shift asking me if I wanted to go and work in neonatal ITU at Doncaster and Bassetlaw hospital.
