Free tickets for the great Labour race to the bottom 13:37 - Sep 23 with 10399 viewshampstead_blue

Labour want to step in and bail out Thomas Cook to the tune of £250m.
Using that as a case study, any private company will just use them as 'lender of last resort'. The state will underwrite everything.....who is going to pay? Anyone who earns a decent wage.....

Labour want to appropriate private school assets and distribute to the other schools.
Join in for the great Labour race to the bottom.........

and the number of scary things under the bed gets bigger and bigger.

Oh, no point in posting 'and the tories are worse'......try and offer a reasoned and sensible argument for the above.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Caught something on the Wireless earlier saying Germany had a simlar problem with a travel company - Merkel chucked them €150m so that they could collapse in a more managed way and not leave people stranded around the globe, or turning up at the airport to see holiday cancelled.

If it is going to cost ~£600m to repatriate everyone from around the world then some form of payment to stop this cliff edge may not have been the worst idea or way of dealing with it.

I saw today that there are twice as many German tourists affected by the TC situation, than there are Brits. Will the British tax payer foot the bill for all repatriations, or just the British ones?

£600m to fly back 150,000 people is £4,000 a flight. wow.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Why are banks excepted from this rule, then?

these are the two I heard this morning.

I left it open to press home the point that if Labour are now underwriting the tourism industry they pretty much will underwrite the whole economy.

This causes huge problems because they either then have to;
1) Nationalise everything
2) Tax the living testies out of us all to pay for it.

Just like the Tories part-did with the banks. Funny old world, innit. One rule for some and another for everyone else.

the banks are slightly different in that banking underpins the entire economy.

The best way to do deal with the banks is to spend the minimum whilst regulating them until they scream. That will change their behaviour (hopefully) for the future.
It also causes structural change so that they don't create and sell the same products which caused all the problems.

Labours answer is to underwrite everything!

4 day week. no loss of pay. and substantially increased tax revenue. it's a miracle.

Think it was ~£600m.

£3,900 for every person stuck in Turkey and Mallorca? Joking aren't you. Also the Government's argument for not bailing them out is that they'll have to repatriate in 3/6/9 months time anyway when their management team still haven't fixed the business.

Good money after bad.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Because there will be serious social consequences if the banks fail. Not pensioners stuck in Lanzarote for an additional free night.

I posted earlier about what Merkel did which I heard on the wireless, they basically gave a company enough to keep trading for a few weeks/months to avoid all this as was apparently much cheaper to do that than repatriate everyone and all the people due to go away etc.

You can already see how market affected by big player dropping out with flight prices straight up - there must be a balance between bailout for a managed decline and no intervention, wonder if anyone did the sums like the Germans did

please don't tell me you believe that?

It is a shocking idea.......we will be laughed at, left behind, and become some low level economical desert.

All that will be left are some deluded socialists grimly hanging onto a pipe dream.

Edit; I work a 4 day week, on my day-off a crucial client calls after some info for a big piece of work, I'm not there, they get hacked-off because the last time they called the previous person was also off work that day.....descends into lost business, revenue, etc etc.......
Please don't say 'effective handover' because that NEVER happens.......

Have I burst the dream yet?

They needed £250m to get through the next 3 weeks.

They needed £1.15bn extra cash to get through the next 12 months and had £1.7bn of debt already on top

Their business was broken and i support the call for criminal proceedings against those in charge of companies that find themselves in this position

Radical idea I know but why doesn’t the govt bail them out to the tune of the £250m and tell them that they have a date of say 3 weeks to clear all current/existing holiday makers abroad, keep the company afloat until this is done, not allow anyone with a booking from the day the money is handed over to go on their holiday?

Then once everyone is repatriated by TC then they can liquidate the business with a saving of £350m to the taxpayer?

Am I just being dumb here but by not bailing them out haven’t the govt just shot themselves in the foot to the tune of £350m?

Wasn’t the £200m-odd required in addition to a much larger investment from elsewhere? Clearly that wouldn’t exist if the plan was a managed decline, so the amount the government would have been required to stump up would presumably have been significantly larger
