Shops/businesses you no longer see 10:30 - Jun 6 with 5450 viewsuefacup81

I was just remembering the old fireplace showroom that used to be on St Helen's Street by the junction with Grimwade Street (a couple of doors up from Golding's Butchers). You don't see places like that any more...

What other businesses seem to have dropped off the face of the earth in the last generation?

A couple of other categories I remember:

Specialist greengrocers - you hardly see those any more. I remember we'd always get our fruit and veg from Robertsons/Robinsons on St Helen's Street, and the old chap there would always give my sister and I a carrot to munch on for the walk home.

The Scout Shop - used to be on Tacket Street?

Proper junk shops - like that place up by the John Bull on Woodbridge Road.

There was one on Norwich road too, just down from Coes. Not sure if it’s still there but it used to sell all manor of crap. Old TV’s etc. Anyone remember it?

Remember that place. Happily sell you a seventh hand sofa for £500.

I think it was called Moonwitch or something similar. I never went in, although physically I don’t think that was possible anyway.

I suspect it was a hoarder masquerading as a business owner.

That is still there - Thomas's Cycle Revolution

Well damn me I went to Northgate Sixth form and in my Geography A-level I forget his first name but surname Thomas he left mid way through that lower year to ‘go and work in the family bike shop’. Seemed short sighted but maybe not such a bad move after all!!!!!

Cobblers - does anyone get shoes repaired these days?
Ironmongers - I grew up in Chelmsford - "Get it at Grippers".
Family run department stores - we had Bonds.
Proper sports shops - we had Pope & Smith.

There’s about 4 cobblers in the town centre (Timpsons - double as key cutters and some other small jobs)

I had a pair of brogues re-soled just the other week

Jack White's, the fire safety place on foxhall Road

May be a completely different shop as no recollection of Jack Whites, but there is still a fire safety shop on Foxhall Road (Firepower)
