Well, that was the clear message from huge gains made by the Lib Dems and Greens in the local elections.

In Brexit heartland, an Essex count on 23:38 - May 26 with 917 views | Pinewoodblue | Beginning to look as if Brexit is doing as much damage to the Labour Party as it is to the Conservatives. Labour have lost support in both Remain and Leave regions. Even alistair Campbell has admitted, on BBC, that he voted Lib Dem. Difficult to see how Labour can keep their position as the biggest party in London without decimating support in Leave areas. At least it seems clear neither of the major parties will want a general election.

It's a great result for the Lib Dems and Greens (and remain in general) but that 23% tied up in the main parties is key. It's impossible to know how those people would vote in a referendum. The ones who care most about Brexit will have moved to a leave or remain party - those people left can't part with their party loyalties but would have to make a decision in a referendum. SB

turnout of 37%. referendum turnout = 72%. all you can compare tonight to is 2014.

Appreciate it's only a tiny sample, but I know several people who couldn't bear to switch away from voting Labour even despite being strongly opposed to Brexit. In general I suspect more Brexiteers are willing to switch their votes as it's an almost religious thing for many of them, and that most of the rump of the Labour vote are remainers. No idea about the remaining Tories though. I guess we'll see some Yougov polling on it in a few weeks time to get a more definitive idea.

Reckon this pushes Tories towards a harder Brexit, Labour to a second referendum. Fiik how it plays out in parliament.

You are also assuming that all the Lib Dem and Green vote are remainers. It's likely that all the extra support they have received are remainers and it is probable that the majority of their existing vote are but not all of them. The more I am watching this I wonder why I have bothered, I don't think you can take anything from tonight, except that nothing has changed. Well that's not strictly true I suppose, it is clear (as Glasgow alluded to earlier) that the two main parties have been hammered by people who are disgusted with their actions and performance since the referendum.

The point of politics is not to figure out what’s popular and make it your policy. And how does Labour solve this problem?
There are no good outcomes for either th Tories or Labour with regards to Brexit. Their voters are as split as the country. I doubt we’ll see either of the two main parties win a majority in the next ten years.
