Ha Ha, its an article in the guardian, typical left wing propaganda. We can if we wish put zero tariffs on, so things will be cheaper. Why don't the people on here ask where all the tariffs that we collect from the rest of the world goes to. It amounts to around £18 billion a year, and guess what we hand it all over to the EU to spend. Just think how much better things will be when we leave, extra money for the NHS, more for the unemployed, disabled and retired folks, whats not to like?

Cue the people that know everything!

Er, do you understand how tariffs work? Stupid question but thought it worth asking.

Really? Ive not seen that. Is the man who refused to talk until the only negotiating lever we had (i.e. no deal) was categorically taken off the table, now using that negotiating lever?

It will hit the poorest hardest, which should focus some minds.

This bit sums up our reliance on imports, which won’t happen quickly, if at all:

The scheduled withdrawal on 29 March comes at a time in the year when the UK imports a lot of fresh, out-of-season, produce — 90% of the lettuce consumed in Britain, 80% of tomatoes and 70% of soft fruits come from, or arrive via, Europe.

'It will hit the poorest hardest, which should focus some minds. '

Yes, it'll make the hard-right loons pushing for it not give a sh*t and the hard left idiots who favour it talk about 'neccessary sacrifices for the greater good'.

I saw a comment yesterday (maybe even on here).

Is this necessarily a bad thing?

With climate change etc., food miles are a very real thing, and our demand that everything be available, whether it is in season or not, leads to food being flown tens of thousands of miles purely because it's out of season in the UK.

We should, Brexit or not, be eating more local produce, both for the sake of the planet and the sake of British farmers. If it takes New Zealand lamb being significantly more expensive than Welsh lamb, then so be it.

But it will not happen that way round, a low tariff on New Zealand lamb will be part of the trade deal and most Welsh hill farmers will be bankrupted.

No. You are completely wrong.

Tariffs are almost exclusively import duties and paid to HMRC by the importer.

If we decide to put zero tariff on Irish beef or German cars it is our prerogative.

If we decide that we want to penalise Irish beef then we can put on a large percentage of duty on it.

Unfortunately it seems that a lot of people don’t seem to understand basics.

We can subsidise our farmers same as the EU does now for all farmers in the EU.

As everyone wants to wallow in the doom and gloom. How about a bit of better news. Unemployment yesterday was at its lowest level since 1975. A.d emploment rose again. No doubt stats dont show the whole picture but at least the news was positive.

It’ll all be sorted out in no time.... umm..

Incidently I’ve been following someone called Robert Hardy atransport advisor and he’s been working and publishing the channel import/export customs declarations. He’s currently saying HMRC won’t enforce safety and security checks for 6 months in the case of a hard Brexit. He seems to be ready and advising for HARD Brexit. Anyway he’s above the political bull$41t journalism and writing up advisories for the transport industry. I’m not too happy about it all but it’s interesting to see.

That's not the case under WTO rules by the way.

If we decide to put 0 tariffs on Irish beef or German cars, we can be forced under WTO rules to put 0 tariffs on car or beef imports from every nation.

Therefore we lose the ability to protect our own car manufacturing or beef farming.

No it will come from profit we make from those who want some of the best food in the world produced by UK farmers. Unfortunately too many remainers don't have the belief in UK workers to produce things the world wants.
