Are we exporting those too? Will need to get some open-top ferries if so. Grayling's on the case.

Would you like a side order of coleslaw with you giraffe sir?

You are talking to people who couldn't run a whelk stall mate.

Whelks? You should be so lucky. I’ve heard we’ll be scavenging seaweed.

(It’s actually a good idea as seaweed is very good for you, but I’d rather not have it 3 times a day as a staple )

That's not the case under WTO rules by the way.

If we decide to put 0 tariffs on Irish beef or German cars, we can be forced under WTO rules to put 0 tariffs on car or beef imports from every nation.

Therefore we lose the ability to protect our own car manufacturing or beef farming.

What do you mean? There is nothing to stop us doing a deal with say Australia for beef, wine and or kangaroos.

That is true, but both of your previous scenarios were with EU countries.
We are free to make trade deals outside of the EU. But, if we don't have a trade deal with the EU post Brexit our trade with them would be under WTO rules.

Under WTO Most Favoured Nation rules, all WTO countries have to be offered the same deals.

So my post wasn't exactly correct, The MFN rule will only apply to countries we don't have a trade deal with.
So if we left the EU right now, we can enjoy special trade agreements with Chile, Faroe Islands, Southern Africa and Switzerland. Any other countries would have to be treated the same.

So to follow on from your scenario, if we make no more deals by March the 29th, we can decide to put 0 Tariffs on Beef from the Faroe Islands, or Cars from Chile, and that's fine.

But if we wanted to put 0 tariffs on beef from Ireland, or Cars from Germany, we would have to offer those same tariffs to every other country, other than those we have trade deals with.

Does that make more sense?

I was just originally correcting the suggestion that tariffs are put on by the exporter.

BREXIT is going to be a bit of an issue for me personally and the vote - and collapse of sterling because of the uncertainty - will probably cost me close on £100k by the time it levels out. I was a staunch remainer and woke up in a daze two years ago.

Two years on I still think leaving is a mistake - at the very least in the short to medium term but what is done is done. More importantly I regard democracy as everything so I don’t want a second vote, I just want to get on with it.

We are where we are and all the disinformation and scare being spouted by pious remainers makes me churn a bit. We have to make the best of what we have and the only way is to grow a backbone.

We seem to be surrounded by a sniping shoal of jellyfish on this board.

Not sure if just a backbone will help.

Everything my company makes is made in the EU.
We have already lost £1million of turn-over to competitors in the EU, and could lose up to £5mil more. That's 50% of our business.

So, its a concern.

So you manufacture in the EU, where do you sell your product?

60% is in the UK, 30% EU, 10% USA.
And before you say just make it in the UK - the last significant UK factory that makes what we sell was closed down last year. The only other one left has no plans to expand, and is happy to run at 100% capacity.

Its a fairly specialised industry, with high set up costs and specific skill set needed, so no one is in a rush to open more UK factories, when the EU has 80% of the global market and do it very well.

I wasn’t going to suggest making it elsewhere but if it’s made in the EU I don’t see how BREXIT will affect you because your EU market won’t be affected and your export market (UK and USA) will have the same issues that your fellow EU manufacturers will have.

A number of issues.
1) We have already lost EU based customers to EU based competitors because of the uncertainty.
2) 2 of our major customers are planning to move supply chains to the EU, so our work is cut out to retain them.
3) Potential delays at ports and cost increases due to duty may reduce demand in the marketplace.

Our EU suppliers are as in the dark as to what will happen as we are. So I am spending a lot of time on a plane in the next few weeks to try and re-assure them and ourselves, despite not knowing what will happen. I can only deal in scenarios. Likewise our CEO is visiting all our customers, and our sales director is out in the US trying to open more markets.

It could all be ok, but we are working hard to make sure all possible risks are covered.

Interesting situation but I don’t know your industry or whether you have warehouse and stock in UK or Europe but on the face of it I would have thought BREXIT would strengthen your sales in UK.

I’m watching a program on an Asian girl cricket team that I want to finish before going to bed but I’d like to revisit this in the morning if that’s ok.

No. You are completely wrong.

Tariffs are almost exclusively import duties and paid to HMRC by the importer.

If we decide to put zero tariff on Irish beef or German cars it is our prerogative.

If we decide that we want to penalise Irish beef then we can put on a large percentage of duty on it.

Unfortunately it seems that a lot of people don’t seem to understand basics.

Yay correct answer.

I gave up on here talking about Brexit as the majority of people just repeat guff they see on the BBC or read in the Guardian and repeat it without any understanding of what they are talking about.

No deal is happening :-)

Where did Corbyn threaten the EU with 'no deal'?
According to the Ch4 news last night what he did was quite the reverse.
