Best laptop for me 09:25 - Jun 12 with 5587 viewsGrief

I have never spent a fortune on a laptop, just been told motherboard has gone on mine and I need a new one!

I am not a gamer, don’t watch movies, i use it for work emails, word and excel surfing the net and Skyping. Guy in the shop said I should get a Lenovo t480 but I looked that up and it was £1000 Plus. I want to spend less than half of that. I have never been a Mac person so it would need to be windows 10 based

I know that there must be some on here who can steer me in the right direction thanks

i bought an Acer from PC World 18 months ago. It has an i5 processor with 8GB ram and Windows 10. Cost £400 and does everything I need it to which is much along the lines of your needs, although it does struggle a bit with Soda PDF which I use for work, by struggle I mean it freezes for about 5 seconds when producing a locked PDF for me to send out.

So basically you want an i5 or better processor and at least 8gb RAM, shouldn't cost more than about 400 bones. I think my screen size is 15 inches, invest in a good screen size if you can those few extra inches make all the difference.

You want to avoid buying Windows *with* the PC too. Buy it separately. Cheaper.

PC Specialist. Google them. You can put your own spec together so be as flashy or straightforward as you want. They even tell you as you're going along if any pf the components you choose aren't compatible. You also don't get all the dross the big companies load on their machines.

PC world is awful for customer service. I would avoid.

I purchased a pc and the wrong one was sent to me had to wait 6 weeks to get a refund and spent about 10 to 12 hours on the phone to them chasing it up and there was no ownership from them at all.

You did very well to get an i5/8gb for under £500, that sort of money will typically buy a 14" i3 with 4gb.

My advice would be to make sure you get something with a solid state hard disk (SSD), as that will give you the biggest speed boost without breaking the bank.

I bought an HP Envy some time ago and it's the best laptop I've had. I'll definately replace it with a similar model when the time comes. Comes in various sizes.

For me, don't buy a touch sensitive screen or dual purpose machine that the keyboard flips over. It's all unneccessary, from previous experience.

Have you considered a refurbished co puter? I bought an HP Elitebook refurbished from Amazon, £320 for what would have been a £1000+ laptop. Was pretty much h as good as new and is much better build quality than a new one of a similar or considerably more expensive price.

I think it was £150 off in a sale at the time so surely the same thing would be about £400 or less by now?

You don't need SSD. Get a HD, cheaper and you get a lot more gigs for your money.

Really? I would think an SSD is absolutely vital. Don't really need gigs these days, it's all in the cloud.

I bought a refurbished and upgraded Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad a few months ago for a few hundred quid

It will do all you want and more. The only downside is they are a bit chunky, but I need that, it gets thrown in the van regularly

Most places will give a decent guarantee for refurbs these days

I got an ASUS from John Lewis and only paid £250.

3 years on and it's storming. It's a smallish screen and the John Lewis guarantee is worth it.

Horses for courses. Hard disk read/write speed is often the biggest performance bottleneck, particularly if you're not looking to spend too much and are likely to have a lower end cpu/ram combo. Personally I'd rather have a rapid machine and add more storage space with an external disk if needed.

An SSD is the biggest value investment you can make for the performance of your machine... no matter how much RAM you have, Windows will end up shuttling data in and out of a paging file... the performance benefits of having this on an SSD rather than a standard HD are massive.

OK, only 25 years in the industry so in a post-expert environment ignore all the following....

For a laptop don't buy home brew.
There isn't much wrong with Acer or Asus.
An SSD is the most important component in the machine.
You want at least 8GB of RAM in Windows 10.
An i3, i5 or i7, or even the Pentium, are not as easy a choice as just picking the highest number. If you are using it for portability look for the "mobile" versions of these processors (checkout Toms Hardware for the best list).
I recommend a screen with a resolution of 1920x1080 or greater. Having a 15" screen with a 1280X720 resolution is horrible, might as well have an 8" screen.

I recommend checking the Dell outlet site. Bought the Ma in Law an i3, 8GB RAM, touch screen with 128GB SSD and 1080p resolution screen for £380 two weeks ago - and it had a back lit keyboard as well, which indicates the value band it would normally reside in. You have to be patient, but they come up from time to time. Full years Dell warranty as well, tiny mark on the hinge was the "fault" not visible when the screen was open. She had been looking at some cheap and nasty HP thing from Argos.
