A report here from the BBC on how the pilot is going in Finland

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-42988734

I think this is a good idea if there is enough job creation in the economy, and will create incentive for people to work, its also less socialist in practice than a benefits system as people currently in work receive the monthly payment, which is basically receiving some of your tax contribution back (highest rate is 31% for the highest salaries, which is surprisingly low for a Nordic country)

Scotland has the same size as Finland and I think it could work better for them than their current benefits system - but they do need the jobs in there economy to justify the system in regard to getting people into work, presumably extra disposable income for people currently in work could contribute to an economic boost + job creation?

whether it could work in England or not is another matter, the larger population south of the border may make it trickier.

Love the idea, just don't see how it could ever work. Would like to be wrong.

I think it's inevitable that a universal basic income will be implemented at some point in the future.

Improvements often come from counter-intuitive ideas otherwise improvements would be obvious and we'd make them.

And it's certainly important to try different things rather than wait for societies to slowly change themselves or just break up and reorganize themselves. We used to have a good record of doing that ourselves in the Post-War years with our groundbreaking social, healthcare and education reform.

The Finns have a healthy balance of socialism and capitalism so they're already a step ahead in not falling back on traditional ideologies and ways of doing things. Their interesting and successful approach to education shows that. I'm worried that led by our politicians and media we've now become too stuck in traditional and populist thinking.

Would be interesting to see how the pilots work, especially in some deprived areas of Scotland.

I guess its success relies wholly on the attitude of the recipients.

Agree.

You need to deliver it with huge dollop of education and incentive. I would be terrified for the children of less educated low income parents who would just stay drunk and smoke more.

It would need to come with some pretty strong strings to make sure the children at that level don't suffer more.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

I think the idea would be that in those sorts of examples, if it was done right, the universal basic income would hopefully replace most benefits the low income parents were receiving, so instead of being subject to the whims of DWP they had a more secure existence.

Might be ok in Scotland, with its smaller population. Not sure it's affordable for the whole UK, tho.

Is it really fair to give it to one part of the UK and not the other parts? I recognise that hasn't happened and it's all debate at this stage.

Done right as well, there could be a substantial saving in admin costs, if the whole thing is streamlined to that extent.

Well, there are actually four council areas in Scotland that have been asked to trial it. Could imagine that on the borders of those council areas it could be a bit divisive.

But regardless, I'm looking forward to ditching the day job and getting the watercolours out.

You could separate them out easily by not allowing in anyone who doesn't know the difference between 'clamouring' and 'clambering'.
