Yep. Stoner is the dog's. But you have to be a regular and therefore patient reader to get how incredible it is. I love these threads because I always find something new!

Third for Stoner. I love McKewan - 'A child in time' Now I've said that I've remembered 'A history of the world in 10 1/2 Chapters' - worth a read.

If you could recommend ONE BOOK on 20:53 - Aug 18 with 9224 views | Darth_Koont | If it's only one book then it's got to be If This Is A Man by Primo Levi. An amazing description of his time at Auschwitz that explains the experience in logical yet human terms. In his mind, there are people who adapt and there are people who die. Think I've read it 7 or 8 times by now. My version also includes The Truce which is his fantastic, strange-as-fück journey back to Italy via the Soviet Union. Fascinating description of how a man and a world emerge from madness and death to rediscover life. If you haven't read it, then get a copy before you next buy milk.

Features a tragic love story, the Great Khan, a plot to topple the Pope, a scholar searching for mythical creatures and a father trying to uncover the whereabouts of his missing son. It's wonderful.

Not yet. You'd recommend? Funnily enough, I just read Augustus. Not quite the same emotional punch as Stoner but feck me he's good at describing the empty cellar of lost love.

If you could recommend ONE BOOK on 21:08 - Aug 18 with 9151 views | Guthrum | If you're into Game of Thrones-type stuff, try Egil's Saga, a tale of Norwegians and Icelanders in the 9th to 11th centuries (probably written a couple of hundred years later, tha author is unknown, but may be the celebrated Snorri Sturluson). I'd definitely recommend. It's more of a conventional story than Stoner but it's beautifully told, I found it pretty engrossing.

It's a fantastic insight in to the conflicts in the Middle East. Quite old now but a great read. Will make you re-evaluate what you believe about the conflict whichever standpoint you come from.
