I've just rang a mate to thank him for his 'happy birthday' voicemail. He told me he'd just got out of the shower, so I thought I'd share that with you. l don't see why I should be the only one with the image of a scrawny sixty-something who has just got out of the shower.

When he was a player Alf came for three successive years to play cricket for a Spurs XI on Whit Monday against the cricket club that I later played for. I got his autograph, and he was very pleasant. I'd have been 10, 11, 12 those years. Lost the autograph book in one of our moves!

Yes, Alf used to like a game of cricket & was a pretty decent batsman, from what I read in the excellent Leo McKinstry biography.
