Signings.....we don't need as many as some seem to think.
at 21:17 9 May 2024

That is 8 signings already - and no back-up left back either.

Maybe we need to decide a board-wide policy about whether the number of signings stated includes or excludes loan players from this season coming back!

Completely agree.

Minus the loan players, Donacian and Ball, and assuming those loaned out last season dont come back into the squad, we would need 2 defenders, a CM, 2 AMs and a striker just to stand still in terms of numbers.

Then you have chances to upgrade - Harness and Jackson are the obvious contenders, maybe Al Hamadi goes out on loan and we need a third striker to provide cover, maybe Edmundson leaves and we upgrade the defence? And who knows if Hdlacky, Walton and Slicker will all be in the squad come the end of August.

So that is 6 to fill the gaps and another 5-6 plausible upgrades that I doubt anyone would bat an eyelid at

Alternative Player of the Season
at 08:47 6 May 2024

Big shout out too to the squad players who haven't necessarily done loads on the pitch. The likes of Harness, Ladapo, Humphries, Walton, Jackson.

The togetherness of the squad has been incredible and it is so easy for a handful of players who are annoyed at not getting much game time to ruin that atmosphere. They have been so professional off the pitch and when called upon they have stepped up to the plate. Whether they remain at the club after the summer is to be seen, but they will always have a place in Ipswich folklore.

It wasn't quite the Clarke thunderbolt that I was expecting to be the crucial goal but I'll take it!

It's also been a tough winter for illness - everyone that I've worked with have had something. There is also just s luck element to these sorts of things too

Don't a few of the team have young kids which won't have helped?

I'd be surprised if it wasn't being thought about by the backroom team - just without a solution being found yet.

There is also a bit of a pattern forming of poor performances directly after big emotional late goals - we drew to QPR and lost to Maidstone after the two Leicester games, lost to Cardiff after the Brizzle game and now today after the Southampton game. It wouldn't surprise me if there is some mental fatigue within the team

Ok. How many more points from 10?
at 11:52 6 Mar 2024

I set up a performance tracker at the start of the season with approximate ppg from different "categories" of teams. Initially calibrated to 65 points and categories based on finishing positions last year, and then recalibrated in December to target 90 points with categories based on how the table was shaping up.

Based on that we are on schedule for 95 points, with 6 points from the next three games, followed by 8 points from the 6 games in April (and 3 vs Huddersfield on the final day).

It would be unfathomable for that to not be enough for autos. But I don't think that would be enough for autos.

Yep, took me a while to drop off and then my little one woke up at 4.40 for a bottle. She went back down at 5.25... only for my 5.30 alarm to go off 🤣.

[Waiting patiently for Guthers updated table] (n/t)
at 19:05 2 Mar 2024

If my maths is right, I'd suggest that we should all wait patiently for another game or two before looking at it.

We are all very patient with Guthram while he gets his table closer and closer to being right, but if it shows us missing out on promotion on goal difference and instead facing Norwich in the playoffs, there may be riots that not even Phil can handle...

My proposal with parachute payments would be to strictly limit what they can be used for and to impose penalties for other uses.

So I would allow parachute payments to pay for anything that doesn't benefit them on the pitch - e.g. to pay the portion of wages for players loaned out that remains with the club.

But also allow relegated clubs to access it with points penalties if they want/need to in the season. Your wage budget is 20m higher than is sustainable? You can clear that with parachute payments but start with -20 points.

He had to go to a QPR game which many people would say is punishment enough.

But not me. Give him a high viz vest and make him pick up all the litter in London

Don't panic if we go behind tonight
at 17:48 14 Feb 2024

On the flip side, we've only dropped 4 points from a winning position - the draws against Norwich and Rotherham.

So the conclusion is that if we go behind we probably won't lose, and if we go ahead we probably will win.

That's the sort of stat I like!

Leif Davis and Luke Woolfenden are currently having medicals at West Ham in a £50m double swoop. Cresswell to return to Ipswich on a six month loan in return.

However the deal is contingent on Ipswich agreeing deals with Plymouth (for Morgan Whittaker), Nottingham Forest (for Divock Origi) and Chelsea (for Trevor Chalobah). An irate looking David Moyes has been spotted in the Stratford Westfield branch of KFC on the phone saying "Mark, you told me those deals were basically done!"

I quite like trying to find links between Ipswich and the teams we are playing against and so far found three:
- George Fowler is an ex-ipswich youth player. He played one game in the league Cup against Crystal Palace (the game where miles kenlock sat with the away crowd), in central defence with Woofie at right back.
- George Elokobi is of course a former player of former Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy.
- Gavin Hoyte is the brother of former Arsenal full back Justin Hoyte, who was so close to joining Ipswich on loan at the start of the 2005/06 season that I'd written him down on my wallchart.

Any more?

The problem with this transfer window...
at 10:18 25 Jan 2024

The other challenge, if we are being realistic, is that the aim for the summer was yo build a squad that would be in the mix for the playoffs - an aim that we are currently beating by 9 places and 19 points. In that context, particularly given how well he played for much of last season, having Ladapo as our backup striker wasn't the problem many people think it is.

Now we have the aim to have a transfer window that keeps us highly competitive in the automatic promotion race against three teams flush with 10's of millions of pounds of parachute payments. Arguably Ashton and the recruitment team have been a victim of the team's success this season.

We still need two strikers and a full back if Williams doesn't come back...

Players who on first sight made you think we’d found the next superstar, but

On his debut, Gwion Edwards did s fantastic little trick where he flicked the ball over both his and the defender's head and he left them for dead. I remember thinking "if every new player is as good as that then playoffs it is!"

There are so many great stats out there about how well we've played.

How about this one: over the last 36 league games, we have taken 90 out of 108 points, for a 2.5ppg average, scoring 90 goals in the process.

Staggering statistics
