The home v away thing
at 17:15 24 Apr 2024

This has been analysed & the main conclusion is that hoem teams do better because referees are influenced by the crowd & therefore bias their decisions - however unconsciously - in favour of the home team.
We all remember how many away players used to get sent off at Elland Road & I remmeber a PL ref saying that you might not think twice about sending off Danng Higginbotham at Old Trafford, but before you sent off John Terry at Stamford Bridge, you would think twice & wonder if you wanted our name to be all over the tabloids on Sunday morning if you'd got it wrong.

R.I.P. Frank Field

A great shame. Field was a political Cassandra - he told the truth, particularly about welfare, but his prophecies weren't believed because dealing with the truth was unpalatable. Blair bottled it, as have subsequent administrations, so we still have the ticking time bomb of unsustainable welfare.
RIP.

You might say that, but the PL TV rights increase in value every year, especially the more competitive overseas rights so it's hard to argue against the fact that the PL is doing exceptionally well as a competitive, attractive product.

So this St George fella

Saints are canonised by the Pope, so it's a Catholic Church thing.
The Aussies played it safe & went for the Blessed Virgin Mary.

So this St George fella
at 09:17 23 Apr 2024

St George was a fanatical Christian soldier in the Roman army & he refused to recant his faith under the rule of Emperor Diocletian, so he was put to death. He was understandably popular during the Crusades, but probably didn;t become the patron saint of England until the reign of Edward III. It's sometimes hard to understand how religious people where in those days.
BTW, he never fought a dragon.

Toenail offside BIN VAR NOW
at 14:48 22 Apr 2024

How could the hair's breadth offside for Coventry's "winning" goal have counteracted a "clear & obvious error" when none of the Man U players seemed remotely interested in appealing for offside?
Of course, the problem is defining what constitutes a "clear & obvious error", but VAR has moved well beyong that, with every goal beinf reviewed as the VAR tried to find a reason to disalow it.

Rishi & Rwanda…

I was amazed when Sunak decided to stick with this complete dud of an idea after inheriting it when he became PM. It was so obviously unworkable, expensive & likely to be challenged endlessly in court. I suppose he stuck with it to keep his right wing happy, but it shows very poor political judgement.

Hockey is better to play than watch. The game at the highest level has been ruined as a spectacle by the advent of rolling subs, which means that players never get tired and space rarely appears.

My son plays hockey regularly & yes, as a hard ball game with little protection visits to casualty are not unknown. Players at high levels routinely wear face masks when defending short corners.

They are if attempted by unskilled players so they generally don't play them.

Onana, pointless booking him
at 09:54 22 Apr 2024

A total joke, Like keepers generally keep wasting time in a normal game if the score is favourable, because they know the referee isn't going to give them a second yellow.
Behaviour from keepers at shoot-outs has become unbearable, largely becasue they know there is no sanction against it.

If the PFA polled their members on the use of VAR
at 09:50 22 Apr 2024

Current players (and managers) are the last people you should ask because they have such a huge investment in the current game. They also tend to be arch-conservatives, opposing any change to the wrold they know & in which they are successful.

Mark Clattenburg is nottingham forest's refree analyst

Exactly. A big factor in international rugby is knowing how the referee, often from a different hemisphere, is likely to interpret the laws, especially at the breakdown.

If you have played or watched good level hockey, you would know that the "aerial" i.e. a long ball over the top, is now an integral part of the game, although it's used more to by-pass the congested midfield & get the ball to a player in the attacking third.
Hockey has made umpteen changes to its rules, partly as a result of the move from grass to artificial surfaces. e.g. after an offence, the player awarded the free hit can simply dribble the ball, while the defenders have to retreat 5 yards.

Such a strange feeling

And Southampton play four times before our next game! They could be ahead of us in the table before we play Hull.
As others have said, we're disappointed by our last 3 results, bur yesterday was a decent performance against a good side. But Leeds & Leicester have also squandered recent opportunities & if you look at the PL, who expected Liverpool & Arsenal both to lose at home this weekend? Plenty of football to be played & we have an advantage over Leeds, who have 2 awkward away games at QPR & Boro.

Why aren’t these pushes in the back in the box being penalised?
at 18:15 13 Apr 2024

Hmm...Leeds could have had 2 penalty kicks late on against Blackburn today on that basis. i'm happy referees have a higher bar for fouls inside the box, or else you'd see even more players going to ground at the merest touch.

Can anyoine explain the substitutions?
at 18:11 13 Apr 2024

Yes, both players had done well, but as others have said, they were getting tired & much of our strength this season has been from attacking substitutions.
Boro were not poor. They offered a constant threat on the break.

Think we'll need to win all 3
at 18:09 13 Apr 2024

Hmm..Boro had to go for the win today & in fairness today they probably had the better chances in the second half.
Hull away won't be easy & they will still have the play offs within reach.
Coventry will have had a lot of games & should be out of the play off picture by the time we play them.
Huddersfield may well be fighting for their lives on the last day.
Yes, Southampton play 4 times before our next game so they could actually be ahead of us before we play Hull, although some of their games aren't easy.
Leicester have WBA (who have lost form) & Southampton coming up so I'm not sure they will win both of those games.
Leeds have away games against Boro & QPR so they will do well to win both of those.
Still going to be some twists & turns & this looks like it's going down to the wire.

Hutchinson
at 18:00 13 Apr 2024

Hutch worked very hard & was a constant threat but his weakness is that he's always looking to cut inside & get on his left foot. Defenders have now realised that; he needs to have the ability to go outside & whip in a ball with his right occasionally as well.

That’s the trouble for Leicester and Leeds….
at 14:49 13 Apr 2024

All we need is a hugely energetic performance today. Middlesbrough are a decent side so we can't guarantee a win, but we need to give it everything today.
