Brighton Winger Sarmiento Set For Town Loan
Tuesday, 2nd Jan 2024 10:26

Brighton winger Jeremy Sarmiento is set to join the Blues on loan having been recalled from a loan spell at West Brom, according to a report in Ecuador which TWTD can confirm.

Sarmiento, 21, joined the Seagulls from Benfica in 2021 and has made five senior starts and 14 sub appearances for the Premier League club.

The 13-times-capped Ecuador international, who can play in wide roles or as a number 10, joined the Baggies on loan in July having signed a new contract with his parent club which runs to the summer of 2027.

While at the Hawthorns, Sarmiento made seven starts and 14 sub appearances, scoring twice, before Brighton announced his recall yesterday.

And, according to Ecuadorian journalist Maria Jose Flores, Sarmiento’s move to the Blues will be confirmed in the next few hours and could also extend into next season. We understand the switch is likely to be rubber-stamped either later today or tomorrow.

“Brighton interrupted Jeremy Sarmiento's loan due to the few minutes he has had with West Bromwich,” her tweet reads in English.

“The Ecuadorian continues to be one of Brighton's big projects for the future, which is why they have already agreed on a new loan.

“In the next few hours they will announce that Sarmiento will play six months for Ipswich Town, which is second in the EFL Championship.

“If they achieve promotion to the Premier League, the loan can be extended for another year, otherwise Jeremy will return to Brighton in June.”

Having been born in Madrid, Sarmiento moved to London as a seven-year-old and was with Charlton’s youth set-up before joining Benfica in 2018.

Prior to committing his international career to Ecuador, for whom he qualifies through his parents, Sarmiento won England caps at U16, U17 and U18 levels.

I’m hanging out for Sinclair Armstrong….as goals are required

What we actually need is a 'target man' rather than an out-and-out striker, though of course someone who could fulfill both functions would be amazing. For those old enough to remember Paul Mariner at his best, he was the ideal front man in a team that was full of goals anyway; someone who could dish it out to centre-backs as well as hold the ball up.

Don't think you have to have played the game to know Broadhead is not an out and out striker and Burgess is a left back as someone mentioned the other day but if im proved wrong i will hold my hands up and admit im wrong.

I think Armstrong is a good shout.
They may well sell before they get relegated to get a better deal.

From a Brighton season ticket holder and mate of mine down here: "He’s good. Explosive, direct and very promising. Great for Ipswich right now I reckon!"

I'm backing Mck and team - quite a few players who were in similar positions have come here and developed very well under the right guidance and management, so I'm hopeful this would be the same, Look at Broadhead and Hirst - very similar and have come up in leaps and bounds since they arrived.

I liked Sinclair Armstrong in his apperanaces vs us this year - however his record for QPR is 1 goal in 34. Maybe one that needs to 'train on' rather than perhaps solving any of todays immediate problems
A few months ago, I and others were suggesting Cole Stockton who is now NOT banging them in for BURTON- I think McKenna will have a plan and I trust it.

What % of Loan players have ever seriously worked out for us ? - I’ve never been in favour of more than absolutely necessary.
Would much prefer to see a Permanent Signing, or one of our ‘promising youngsters’ given an opportunity ! Assuming we have some, which I know we have !
Our most successful Club times surrounded that Policy and became our Pedigree of bringing players through.
Many Loan Players, but not all, are other Teams ‘cast off’s’ for whatever reason unfortunately !

One note of caution - like Hutchinson and Williams, it might take Sarmiento a few games to settle down and get up to speed with our system. Please be patient during this process!

No rude comments if he isn't immediately a world-beater!

@blueboy, it’s not the time for blooding youngsters! It also contradicts your stance on if the club is serious about gaining promotion!….so let me ask you, what are your expectations from the club from now up to May? …. I mean you’ve also remarked about posts banging on about being second, as though you’re expecting it not to be maintained! We certainly won’t with introducing youngsters!

Is someone saying that Hirst’s original loan was not a good piece of business ? Loans are part and parcel of the game. I’m sure the club will want to get the balance right unlike past Managers.

I say put Sarmiento in against Wimbledon in the Cup and see how he works out, I'm sure KM will field a few of our younger players

the manager has totally lost it...brighton and uraguay have won nothing in the last 100 years..

Very tricky player runs and runs until he's basically out of energy which would explain his lack of game time at Brighton, add to that players like Encisco Mitoma and at the time Macallister in front of him no doubt this had something to do with him going to WBA and now Ipswich.
He gives everything and can't be faulted for lack of effort, he's not a out and out striker, loves to pick up the ball out wide then drive into the box and will shoot from anywhere if given the space.
I really like him and was surprised he has come to Ipswich considering Brighton's injury list, but given a run of games I think you will enjoy watching him.
Don't break him
