Striker Sammon Joins On Loan
Friday, 15th Aug 2014 13:35

Derby County striker Conor Sammon has joined the Blues on a season-long loan from Derby County. Town have been linked with the 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international on a number of occasions since Mick McCarthy took over at Portman Road.

Sammon trained with the Blues squad this morning and will be in the squad at Reading tomorrow if the paperwork goes through before tomorrow's noon deadline.

Sammon told the club site that the chance to work with Mick McCarthy was one he couldn't turn down: "Once I became aware that the gaffer was interested in bringing me to Ipswich, it was an opportunity that really excited me.

“I have always admired the manager from the time he was in charge of the Ireland national team. He is very straight, very honest.

"He came across that way in the interviews I used to see him do from years ago and from the conversations I’ve had with him, he’s exactly the same now.

“I’m looking forward to working under him. I think I’m the type of player that will suit what the gaffer wants from his players and how the team is here.

“Last season was a frustrating one for me on a personal level at Derby, even though the team had a successful season and were close to getting promoted.

“It was difficult training through the week knowing that you weren’t going to be playing on the Saturday. Coming to Ipswich gives me a new opportunity to really fight for a place in the team. Hopefully it can be a very successful loan for me and the club.”

Explaining the move, Derby boss Steve McClaren told the Rams' official site: “Conor’s first-team chances were limited last season, especially with Chris Martin in superb form.

“That was unfortunately going to be the case for him this season, especially following the arrival of Leon Best from Blackburn Rovers, so moving on loan to Ipswich presents him with a strong possibility of playing first-team football.”

The Dubliner, who has been handed the Town number 32 shirt, played youth football with local side Cherry Orchard, then moved on to UCD, Derry City, Kilmarnock and then Wigan before joining Derby for £1.2 million in the summer of 2012.

Since then Sammon, who has won nine full Ireland caps, has made 49 starts and 40 sub appearances for the Rams, scoring 13 goals.

Sammon, who earlier in the summer was linked with a reunion with former Derby boss Nigel Clough at Sheffield United, is contracted to the Rams for another two years.

itfcperv - What season was that game. When we beat them here end of last season, he didn't look up to much when he came on as sub 2nd half, didn't look much of an impact player.
So it looks like another loan season for Marriot, not ready for the fray in MM eyes yet, it makes our options up front to be very similar types of players.
Hope i am wrong and if he starts Saturday I hope he gets a hatrick. Welcome Coner.
COYB's.

Do you all have short memories? We signed McGoldrick a few months ago when he was cast out from a team who was expected to do better than us in the league. You can never judge the player on the league in this division. Chambers, McGoldrick and Berra were all deemed as not good enough by their clubs. What great aquisitions they were for us. Let's give Connor a chance. There is no good slagging him off now.

Seems like Nouble isn't very popular. He scored a few important goals last season and then a couple in pre-season. I reckon if I was universally lambasted by the fans I might not want to show up.

I, for one, welcome Sammon's arrival and look forward to seeing how he will progress under Connor and McCarthy. He's looked quite handy in the past when I've seen us play Derby.

As for those demanding a pacy, skillful striker, can you name one of those who is 1) available; 2) within our price-range (fee and wages); and 3) would be a good fit for our team? For those mourning the loss of Taylor, he didn't fit into that category, with just the one decent season at Peterborough and one goal for us in 25 appearances.

After Mick has gone all those who are only ever wise after the event will quote this signing as the beginning of the end. Mick is a decent bloke but serves up a dour style of football. Fulham played us off the park for most of the game and this guy will bring only more of the same.

played us off the park? , yeah they really did , just forgot that we play football up and down the pitch not across it .

Fulham?? They had nothing until the final 10 and if Wordsworth had put his header away they would have folded completely. Played us off the park!! What a joke.

Yeah Fulham might off played us off the park but never done anything with the ball. I think we should give Sammon a chance because we have a small squad and need players. Any news about Williams comming back on loan

unlike some on here i dont claim to know a lot about the player, but i hold Mick in high regard, i trust that he knows what the player may bring to the team ,so let the player prove himself, dont knock him before he has kicked a ball , get behind the team get behind the player . COYB .

Muscle toe - why do you fancy playing across the pitch? You do know the goals are at each end and not on the sidelines?? ;)

In response to Bluebadger's dumb statement, this donkey has been given games , Taylor has not and is a winger not an out & out striker. Mick Mills' comments on Wednesday morning (Radio Suffolk) summed it up, Taylor was MOM but then booted off to Rotheram. I think this has become a personal thing between MM & Taylor who unfortunately is the most naturally gifted ITFC player & this really shows a lack of integrity by MM also evident in his handling of Vaselli.
