Striker Sammon Joins On Loan
Friday, 15th Aug 2014 13:35

Derby County striker Conor Sammon has joined the Blues on a season-long loan from Derby County. Town have been linked with the 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international on a number of occasions since Mick McCarthy took over at Portman Road.

Sammon trained with the Blues squad this morning and will be in the squad at Reading tomorrow if the paperwork goes through before tomorrow's noon deadline.

Sammon told the club site that the chance to work with Mick McCarthy was one he couldn't turn down: "Once I became aware that the gaffer was interested in bringing me to Ipswich, it was an opportunity that really excited me.

“I have always admired the manager from the time he was in charge of the Ireland national team. He is very straight, very honest.

"He came across that way in the interviews I used to see him do from years ago and from the conversations I’ve had with him, he’s exactly the same now.

“I’m looking forward to working under him. I think I’m the type of player that will suit what the gaffer wants from his players and how the team is here.

“Last season was a frustrating one for me on a personal level at Derby, even though the team had a successful season and were close to getting promoted.

“It was difficult training through the week knowing that you weren’t going to be playing on the Saturday. Coming to Ipswich gives me a new opportunity to really fight for a place in the team. Hopefully it can be a very successful loan for me and the club.”

Explaining the move, Derby boss Steve McClaren told the Rams' official site: “Conor’s first-team chances were limited last season, especially with Chris Martin in superb form.

“That was unfortunately going to be the case for him this season, especially following the arrival of Leon Best from Blackburn Rovers, so moving on loan to Ipswich presents him with a strong possibility of playing first-team football.”

The Dubliner, who has been handed the Town number 32 shirt, played youth football with local side Cherry Orchard, then moved on to UCD, Derry City, Kilmarnock and then Wigan before joining Derby for £1.2 million in the summer of 2012.

Since then Sammon, who has won nine full Ireland caps, has made 49 starts and 40 sub appearances for the Rams, scoring 13 goals.

Sammon, who earlier in the summer was linked with a reunion with former Derby boss Nigel Clough at Sheffield United, is contracted to the Rams for another two years.

He won't get a game for one of our rivals and they are more than willing to give him to us!!! Says a lot to me.
Willing to work hard, We need more than that.
I hope for my £30+ a ticket he does well.

If he has Rep Ireland caps he must be a hell of a lot better than Nouble. I seem to remember seeing him at Wigan in Prem and he looked dangerous and had running in him...? I'm not feeling as negative as most on here, but agree we could do with a different kind of striker than 3 of the same...

mickymacsbarmyarmy. I hope you are right and we get lucky 2seasons in a row. Doesn't happen often.

Conor Salmon was an extremely promising youngster who failed to live up to expectations. That said those who have seen him play will appreciate what a handful he is for defenders. I accept he doesnt score too many goals but I think he could be a shrewd aquisition. Please you can't compare him with Nouble. Welcome abored.

The Derby fans seem delighted he has gone. Not so good then.

Still, we need more players as we have such a small squad. Is he better than Nouble though? Time will tell.

Even as one of Micks most ardent supporters I'm disappointed with this. Even as one of Taylors biggest critics I'd rather have Taylor. He loiks out of shape and over weight to me. Not at all inspiring. Never rated him, dont rate him now. Pray Bajner becomes a superstar!

Always reminds me of Scowcroft when I have seen him play.
Not my first choice but in Mick I trust.
Welcome to ITFC Conor

I love the way if you have an opinion different to the mega positive people who s**t rainbows it makes you an idiot.
The point some fans are making is this isnt the kind of signing most of us we expected. Its a nippy goalscoring striker who plays on the shoulder of the last man type striker that we need.Murph, Bajner and Nouble are all big strong strikers who work hard. Murph holds it up well and even Didz is great at that.
This is another sign that it will be another grafting season of grinding goals out as opposed to catching teams on the break etc.
This is the only striker we will bring in after Taylors departure due to lack of fubds etc, the point is theres better options out there, this is all a bit safe and samey.

Big, strong, works hard and hassles defenders. Murphy and McGoldrick playing off him. Like this.
A good presence on set pieces too.

Not someone I've ever been impressed with but will reserve judgement until he's had a few games and shows us what he can do. Very much the kind of player MM likes, I just hope the fact we've gone with a target man type player means Marriott will be given the chance as the McGoldrick understudy.

@floridaboy - and we're idiots!?! - it's Sammon not Salmon.
@thebeat - spot on, that is what we were hoping for a quick nippy striker who knows where the net is but in reality...it was never going to happen (see my post yesterday re: Taylor on loan).

Well that's the replacement for Nouble now for Taylor's one :)

...also what we have to understand Derby play a different style of football from us...on the deck, to coin a phrase 'not Steve's kind of player'.

Didn't know him at all to be honest. Then I saw:- Conor Sammon, the new Heskey youtube. Now I am worried. A replacement for Nouble, it seems not!

Can't believe how blinkered some of you are on here..the guy has always been a bit of a donkey (no disrespect to donkeys) plus he reminds be of Jimmy Somerville.

There's no doubt he's better than Nouble but i'm probably better than Nouble tbh.

Hope Mick's not going to shove Marriott & Bajner outbof his plans for this average joe.

I hope he makes me eat my words but I doubt it.

Enjoyable reading the comments. I do not really have a view either way on this, I have seen him play for Derby and Wigan - he hasn't stood out to any great degree, but he hasn't exactly looked noublesque either. Let's see how he gets on.
