Spurs Right-Back Linked Again
Spurs Right-Back Linked Again
Thursday, 5th Jan 2012 11:29

Town, Burnley and Leeds are all interested in signing Tottenham right-back Adam Smith, according to one of this morning’s tabloids. TWTD revealed that Town were eyeing the 20-year-old back in March.

Despite plenty of Championship clubs targeting him during the summer, the England U21 international joined the MK Dons on a season-long loan in August.

Although that would appear to rule him out of a January switch, Spurs may have included the option of a recall in January should they feel he would be better served by gaining experience on loan at a higher level or if a club was interested in doing a permanent deal.

Londoner Smith signed a new one-year deal at White Hart Lane in the summer.

Boss Paul Jewell was spotted watching the MK Dons in action back in September.

I saw him play for MK dons earlier in the season and thought he looked decent, was very impressed by Matt Lowton when Sheff Utd played Notts County over xmas.

I bet some Hack (not Sir Phil of Ham) got the wrong end of the stick and linked us with Alan Smith earlier in the week. Leeds were linked then as well.

Used to play football with him when I was younger... he lives near me so only an hour commute to ipswich... (better than burnley and leeds)

Why sign a player on a year's contract and loan him out for the duration? Not sure why Spurs did that

JimmyJazz - offer him contract, is he goes you get compo, if he stays you loan him out to see if he can cut it, if not, release him. gonna be how the big clubs do it more and more, wouldnt surprise me if in ten years we have the EPL top 6 clubs with 'B' teams in the league as they do in Spain.....

buryblue- looking through our squad, I think that we definitely need more experience...

Radiogaga, I'm just saying with the wobbly defence we have I think we need an established RB, preferably someone who has learned the game but still got a few years ahead of him, i.e 25-28

Saw him at Weston Holmes community stadium for England u21s, he looks a very good player and would be a great addition to the club!

Good prospect and actually plays RB, would be delighted if we could sign him as we have been crying out for a proper right back for ages. Could do on the right what Cresswell has been doing on the left.

Just anybody who is under 30 and isn't a full-time premiership reject would be nice.

sounds like a very good player, if we can sign him permanently!

I think we, as Ipswich fans, should probably swallow a great deal of pride here and take note of what Norwich and Southampton have done/ are doing. The last time ITFC were going in the right direction under Burley and Royle, it was less about throwing money around and hoping this will be our year, and more about just having a simple but progressive long term plan to mould a group of players who could be ITFC players for some time (excluding the occasional Tony Mowbray or Mark Venus). I think experience is good, as long as you don't go for experience just for going for experience's sake, which I think town have been very guilty of this summer in particular. Often, plugging for young and hungry players who have not played at the top level before and have very obvious talent are more determined to succeed/ get there than those that have been there before, done it and got the t-shirt and are half heartedly interested in getting back to the top but ultimately have big wages. Certainly Carlos Edwards is not a long term solution at right back and can't believe we have had a right winger playing at right back for well over a year now without it being addressed.

He was an ever-present in the Bournemouth side that almost made it to the League One play-off final last year. Not bad for a 19 yr old.

buryblue, more experianced than Cresswell do you mean? or like Edwards?

Tomisamos, read my response to radio gaga, the point I'm trying to make is that with our ropey defence I'd rather see am established but with legs left RB around 25-28. Although since I made that post seeing that Blake and St Ledger are the subject of interest our defence may not be as wobbly and could cater for 2 young full backs.
