Burnley's Marney on Jewell's Wish List
Burnley's Marney on Jewell's Wish List
Wednesday, 15th Jun 2011 22:26

TWTD understands that Burnley midfielder Dean Marney is amongst the many players on Blues boss Paul Jewell’s summer wish list. The Town manager is looking to add up to five more signings before the new season gets under way on Saturday 6th August, including a replacement for skipper David Norris, whose switch to Portsmouth was confirmed earlier today.

Marney, 27, started his career with Tottenham, during which time he went out on loan to Swindon, QPR, Gillingham and Norwich.

Having made only four starts and seven sub appearances for Spurs, scoring two goals, both in a 5-2 victory over Everton, the Barking-born player joined Hull City in July 2006 for an undisclosed fee believed to be around the £1 million mark.

After four years, 111 starts, 27 games from the bench, nine goals and a promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs with the Tigers, 6ft tall Marney moved to Burnley for a fee reported to be around £500,000 in May 2010. In his first season at Turf Moor he made 37 starts and played four games as a sub, scoring three goals.

A one-time England U21 cap, the box-to-box midfielder, who was previously linked with the Blues in 2007 when with Hull, has another two years remaining on his Burnley contract.

Meanwhile, Doncaster Rovers chairman John Ryan says striker Billy Sharp, the subject of a £2.3 million Town offer earlier in the summer, wouldn’t have joined the Blues even if they had persisted in their interest rather than switching their attention to Michael Chopra: “They wouldn’t have come back in for Billy anyway. Billy didn’t want to go to Ipswich.”

Elsewhere, Connor Wickham was again an unused sub as England’s U21s drew 0-0 with Ukraine in their second game at the UEFA European Championship in Denmark.

I am quite hurt by Billy Sharps' comments. I hope the next time he washes his whites a red item gets accidentally put in with them and he ends up with a heck of a lot of pink garms. As for John Ryan, I hope the next time he goes to take a shower, there's no (or very little) hot water left!!!!!!!!!

LOL at BongoSponglemeister's comment -

Wow, strong words there!!!

I wouldn't wish a cold (or luke-warm) shower on my biggest enemy.

The water heater didn't kick in yesterday morning and I did have to have a lukewarm shower - to be honest, it was so humid that I didn't mind. I would rather that Billye Sharpe was stuck in a lift with Jeremy Kyle for forty six minutes.

Dolly:

His goal return isn't great, but then the purpose of a midfielder is to provide for the strikers (unlike us last season, when Norris usually had to go on and put the ball in the net himself). Marney had Rodriguez, Iwelumo and Eagles actually scoring the goals.

He certainly has a lot of experience, at most levels of English football. Reasonable disciplinary record, too (not constantly going to be at risk of suspension).

Shades of Charlie Austin transfer with Billy Sharp....

Anyway, I am very happy Jewell has got 5 more targets on his radar as we need strengthening everywhere.

If we can get 4 more new players in before Aug 6 I would be chuffed

Didn't Mr. Ryan initially comment [ after our bid ] that he expected ITFC to come back with another offer ? Now he is saying that they [ us ] wouldn't have come back in for him - its make your mind up time John. Think you're acting like a ladies thinga-me-piece because your plan hit the fan !

Connor is in the u21 for experience mainly , and I would be at all surprised if Jewell has spoken to Pearce and asked if CW could NOT be used that much, if at akll.

Dont forget this kid hasnt had a proper break for nearly two years since bursting onto the senior level. He NEEDS a break - Jewell actually said this when CW was announced as in being in the U21 squad.

I personally hope he doesnt play for U21, we need him fit for pre season with Town!

Sour grapes Mr Ryan, tried it on and failed to boost the fee, teach you to be greedy.

I think town should just release a statement "In your face Ryan". Purely because his gamble to get more dough out of us has not paid off, now he his trying to make it look like that there was no chance of a deal, in that case why put a price tag on the guy?

Has anyone seen the list of players available on free transfers from prem clubs? Hopefully this is what PJ has been looking at. Includes Marcus Hahnemann, a better GK than Fulop IMO. For those wanting more presence in midfield there is Patrick Vieira. Also available to provide the ammo for Chopra and Wickham are Andy Reid (tubby & slow, but can pass the ball), Jason Koumas (was he at Wigan the same time as PJ?), Seb Larsson & Jonathan Specter. Need another centre back, choose from Woodgate, Craddock or Gabbidon. Can't believe how many players there are available, and all probably holding out for premier league clubs to pick them up, and too dumb to look to the Championship to ensure that they stil get paid. Oh well, we can only hope that some would rather still play football and would be open to offers.

Shame about Sharp, but at least we quickly moved on.

Marney would be a good signing.
