McAuley Told He Can Leave
McAuley Told He Can Leave
Wednesday, 16th Sep 2009 22:27

Central defender Gareth McAuley has confirmed that Town have made him available for transfer. The Northern Irish international has had a difficult start to the season and was red-carded during Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.

The 29-year-old, who was recently stripped of the captaincy, says he has been told to find a new club: “My agent got a call from the chairman who said if a club could be found for me then to go ahead.”

McAuley, who was recently linked with Middlesbrough and Sheffield United, joined the Blues last summer for £1.1 million from Leicester having been chased by former manager Jim Magilton since the previous transfer window.

If someone makes 2 honest mistakes - & in his position like goalkeeper, they show up bigtime, is it best to publicly ruin the fella or to try & restore his confidence? Note, he didn't cost us the game on Tuesday. All this has played out in 72 hours.

He cost over £1m. He is a successful international. He is good at this level. We will get nowt for him now due to shut window, have no replacement & he's bbeen shot to bits - for basically 2 mistakes in 72 hours. It's too reactionary. Give him the same time you want to give Keano!

Do we always have to air our dirty linen in public?????
What effect do you think this has on morale for a team that is already shot of confidence.
Do any of the top managers such as Wenger and Ferguson ever publicly critisise their own players??
I thought Keano had learned his lessons but obviously not!!
I for one am keen to give the new manager time to bed in his team but players are coming in and out, formations and tactics are changing from game to game and is it any wonder that the team look confused and shell-shocked??
I am ever the optimist so will continue to hope :)

It's a shame, I feel sorry for GM because as mentioned above he did reasonably well for most of the match Tuesday, and in the end he probably saved us a point. However, the fact that no-one in our defence noticed Earnshaw come on the other night despite the enormous din or bothered to get anywhere near him at all points to the fact that something has got to change. Bringing him in for too much money from a relegated side and immediately making him Captain was obviously too much and he never really settled, and is so low on confidence that it would be best for all if he moves on. Pim and Bruce must be first choice now barring arrivals, although I reckon Delaney would probably do quite well at centre-half if needed. Even if GM wasn't suspended, would you pick him again? Not for a while that's for sure.

I've read the odd comment suggesting that RK has ruined a good side that he inherited from JM, but this couldn't be further from the truth in my opinion. It could be easy to think that we did ok last year, but in reality we saw some of the worst football I've ever seen at PR, and the worst Town side I think I've ever seen, including Duncan era. JM wasted lots of money on a hugely unbalanced side full of players who looked as if they didn't want to be there and had no idea what they were doing. It is going to take time to turn the club around, and turnover of players is a big part of that. Whatever happens, nobody should even be thinking about another change of manager, that would be potentially disastrous in my opinion. Follow the Town, up or down. Remember?

I would like to hear what Big Roy says to players in the dressing room and on the training pitch.... - They seem scared to play football and prone to "trying too hard" and making mistakes. Yes, McAuley has had teething problems this season (according to people on here) but he is a fantastic athlete and a solid defender. I trust Roy with my entire contents of my wallet (considering I've paid for my Season ticket up front) but maybe his "heavyhandedness?" is not going down well with certain players which is is causing them to do Cruyff turns on the edge of the centre circle :-) ...

I agree La Paz Magilton ruined this football club and is a disgrace. its funny how he's been so vocal at QPR about how the squad is better than the 1 he left at ipswich, a squad he spent 12 million pound assembling. could it be the arrogant tosser did make a bad signing after all?

We haven't had a great start to the season but we are having to make whole sale changes to un do the shambles of a set up magilton left us with

"KEANE TAKES OVER

EVERYONE WETS THEMSELVES - NOW THEY ARE SLAGGING HIM

HE INHERITED MAGILTIONS S***E EXCUSE OF A SQUAD FULL OF LEAGUE 1'ERS AND NEARLY MEN NOT UP FOR A BATTLE!

GAVE THEM A CHANCE, THEY DIDNT TAKE IT

NOW HAS TO SHIP THEM OUT AND LOOK WHAT HE IS BRINGING IN

QUALITY.......!! (With the ever so slight exception of Healy)

WE HAVE PLAYED SEVEN GAMES, HAVE NOT WON, BUT KEANE IS TURNING THE SQUAD AROUND AND CAN NOT BE EXPECTED TO PRODUCE A PROMOTION WINNING TEAM FROM THAT GROUP OF PLAYERS....!

KEANE'S AMBITION IS PROMOTION, HE WANTED IT IN ONE SEASON, THATS WHAT ROY KEANE WANTS BECAUSE HE HAS GOT AMBITION!

A LOT OF MAGILTIONS SQUAD DONT SHARE THAT.......!! SO GET EM OUT

I AM MORE THAN HAPPY TO USE THIS SEASON TO BUILD, AND EXPECT MORE NEXT SEASON, ITS NATURAL.

THIS LEAGUE IS THE TOUGHEST YET BY MILES, THE 3 THAT CAME DOWN WILL GO BACK UP FOR SURE.

AND IF WE CARRY ON GETTING OFFICIALS LIKE TUESDAY THEN PROMOTION WOULD NEVER HAPPEN EVEN WITH A QUALITY GROUP OF PLAYERS........

KEANO I BELIEVE IN YOU - AND MORE OF OUR SUPPORTERS SHOULD DO THE SAME"

I think we should make that into a chant +1

Everyone should go and read Blue_Fred's post on the first Page. Well Said and so very true.

GM kind of represents the whole team in a way. Short of Form, despite being decent. Hounded by the fans for every wrong move, trying to play for his contract rather than concentrating on bonding the new players into the Squad an ultimately the Team.

The FANS are a big part of what's wrong, how long before Prawn Sandwiches are part of the post match talk from RK?

I'll be one that sad to see GM go, for the money I don't think we get like for like.

Do you honestly think Roy Keane or for that matter GM give a tinkers toss what a load of 'fans' write on this or any other forum. Grow up!

re BlueFred

i can't keep up with the logic here, i bet GM can't wait to get away from the clubs 'fans' and any good CB will probably go anywhere rather than here given the amount of support all the other new signings have been given by the 'fans'

Keane's revolution seems to be turning into a revulsion, spurred on by short sighted fans who believe we have a right to expect top flight competition at FPR and cannot see that foundations are being laid to change the clubs long term fortunes from the current mid table Championship status to challenging for mid table Premier league status

He had a bad start to last season but came good in the end but he's onto a loser if he stays so best to get shot if we can get some decent cash in...Personally I think we could do with 2 central defenders because as much as I like Bruce & his commitment he's not captain material (Leadbitter for me) and he can be very dodgy at times...we do need someone big and no-nonsense in the middle ala Mowbray/DeVos...if only we could get Shittu+DeMeritt in.

I agree with La Paz that the football at Portman Rd for the last 3 yrs has been the worst in my 30yr experience of watching Town. No spirit of Fizz, no excitement & very disjointed. If at least we could play entertaining, flowing stuff it would be a start. We've wasted a fortune of Marcus's money & haven't really got one premiership quality player. That's a fact.

Bam Bam for centre back! Would put a smile on the face if nothing else!

I like you 2 Bright Blue...........

There are too many people who think the nice old days are gonna make us a premier league team, Bring back Magilton, Bring back Naylor, why did we let young Jordan go and so on..................!!

We need to be nasty, have a bit of guts, and get stuck into it........

I am sure Marcus might start to think he would have had more enjoyment out of Magiltons 12 million sticking it on a bonfire on his country estate!

Glad Keano seeing sense McAuley was never capt marerial or even a good defender for what we paid for him he only had a few good games for us and they can be counted on one hand , but good luck to him we need to focuss on an experienced centre half Jay deMerrit ?

Surco72 added 12:11 - Sep 17
Did Magilton not sign both Wrights , Bruce and Walters without who we would only have scored one goal and conceded many more ? So far RK has spent 8 million and only Leadbitter is any better than what we had ,so until we actually get some results rather than keep saying they will come lets not praise Mr Keane to highly because he has actually achieved nothing FACT .

Shame we didnt get rid of him at the start of the season, wouldnt have conceded have the goals from his schoolboy mistakes! Bruce and balkenstein to form a partnership, wright left back and rosenior right back, sorted!!

Dobbie & NW10 Tractor although well versed in ITFC opinions you are not so well versed with sarcasm! if you honestly think that I owuld start supporting another team like that then your a bit fickle! Like everyone on this site I have supported town since i could kick a ball, and again like everyone on this site will support them through anything regardless of the teamt we put out, the manager we employ or the pies we sell at PR!
Perhaps you should ignore my sarcastic & slightly humurous comments in future!

Good decision for both the player and the club! GM should never have been made captain by Jim as he is not a natural leader, too quiet! This was a poor decision by Jim who was always passionate when he played.
Whilst the start to the season has been poor for Town let's not forget how bad we have been over the last few years. Clearly we did not have the players to take us up so you have to clear some out and bring in better calibre players. Okay the jury is still out on Delaney and Healey (who only cost £50K) but Edwards, Rosenior and Leadbitter look good and better than we had.
I don't think Garvin is a good enough midfielder to win the battles and take us up and I do wonder about his attitude. It's time to battle it out, get behind Roy and the team and stop moaning. RK was a top player and I am sure he has a plan and style that he believes will take us up. I don't think he realised the lack of quality in the squad although he was prepared to give them a chance.
Come on you blues!!!

I agree with Dobbie and the Truth. Some people making decent comments on here for a change!

People on here make me laugh. McAwful plays and everyone slags him off and say he is not worthy of pulling on the Town shirt. His performances have certainly not been consistent, or good enough to be included every week, therefore Keane takes away the captaincy from him, because he cannot guarantee him his place. That was a smart move and shows players that no one is safe from being dropped, based on poor performances; unlike Magilton who picked his buddies every week.

Now everyone seems to be all of a sudden wanting McAuely to be given a chance. How many chances does he need? They are now saying Keane has lost the squad, he does not know what he is doing, and how can he do this to poor Gareth. Unbelievable!!

Let's get one thing straight, just because Keane is the manager, he does not have to like all the players; he does not have to be best buddies with them, in fact he should not be. They need to show him respect! Are many of us best buddies with our bosses? Heck, do we even like our bosses? Probably not.

How people can be commenting that Keane has lost the squad and all that BS is beyond me. We know nothing of what is going on with the squad. As far as I can see, Keane is getting rid of the players who he does not see taking this club forward - McAuley, Rhodes (yes Rhodes), Thatcher, Wright, Garvan - so he is doing the right thing. Again, according to most on here Thatcher and McAuley were long overdue to be shown the door, and now they have.

Keane is building HIS squad and most of the players that he has brought in so far have been good acquisitions. I for one, will be behind him all the way.

didnt GM play a big part in Leicester conceeding less goals than anyone in the championship (despite going down) he clearly has pedigree and potential which shone through when people finally got off his back last season wonder how many of those boo boys would be able to relax and do a good job if they walked into work and everyone boo'd and jeered?! I think he has had an awful start to season, not helped by people getting on his back, but i also think we will regret it when he goes as with a decent CB next to him i think it could be a good pairing. Bruce great commitment but really not good enough as a player. Well thats my humble opinion anyways.
