Who is the closest player we've had to him in the past?

Not in terms of overall ability - obviously we've had more talented players - but in terms of the type of player and influence on the side.

I'm struggling for anyone matching the profile. Would Holland be the closest?

I would say more Jim than Holland. Not in terms of playing style but the relentlessly high standards he sets of those around him.

Geraint Williams

He was the same age ish and had that similar central holding midfield role. Someone who could get the ball back and keep it.

Celestial gods but I can’t wait for him to leave now.
We have dozens and dozens of players in that bracket.

Going back further, Brian Talbot.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Chambers. Captain for what 8 years perhaps?

Now I didn't rate him at the end. But the bloke was skipper for years and years through our darkest days.

I still think Morsy is quite a unique player. He's built like a barrel but has underappreciated finesse to go with it.

….I’ve not seen us playing in the 3rd Division before.

If we get the chance it will be interesting to see if he has the same influence in the Championship.

Enduringly lovable, intelligent and thunderingly exquisite.

Not a perfect comparison, but I think he's a bit like Grant Leadbitter, who was also tidy on the ball, could occasionally get forward, feisty in the tackle etc. Morsy has a greater influence on the side, but they both held the club captain role.

This is more or less what I was getting at. I get that we've had inspirational captains before and they've probably had a similar influence on sides, but Morsy is so different to any player I've seen play for us - since around 2000.

His ability and willingness to run with the ball and have players bounce off him is ridiculous.

Even when he couldn't run in his last season he was still out most pivotal player. He could have done without Royle choosing to play Horlock and Currie too in what, was memorably dubbed, our ageing triumvirate.

Personally feel that if we lose him it'll be really demoralising for the squad. Also, we'd need a real midfield-general to replace him and they are hard to find (plus costly).

Seeing Jim play wide right in his last season or so was….interesting but as you say he was still amazing for so many reasons.
I miss that guy.

Depends. Some might not agree with players moving to Saudi. We don't know their personal thoughts.

Probably Magilton based on position and influence.

If just talking way he influences I would think maybe Jason De Vos. By example and just has a presence. You wouldn't mess with either of them.

Magilton was much more vocal.

Mick Mills.

Though Mick was more versatile playing in defence and midfield and also has more wonderful posture.

I will throw a new name into the mix: elements of a young Owen Garvan.

Garvan went game after game without giving the ball away. His retention and distribution were superb. Morsy is more athletic, Garvan more likely to play a sweeping long pass.

I will also drop in Sylvain Legwinski as a possible 70% match up.

The best fit answer from the past has already been given. It's Jim, isn’t it?

The closest fit ITFC player to Sam Morsy of all time:

Got to be Massimo Luongo. Very similar attributes, and playing the same system accentuates that. (As do the beards and haircuts!)
