We lost a game of football
at 16:34 9 Mar 2024

A novelty over the course of this season which is an incredible feat.

It’s not the first time we’ve conceded late goals and it won’t be the last time.

Dust ourselves down and on to next week.

He's putting in one hell of a shift tonight.

I've lost track of the amount of time he's won back possession.

The quality of strikers...
at 09:10 19 Feb 2024

It's no coincidence that results over the Christmas period fell off a little bit with George Hirst's inujury.

Ladapo wasn't the striker needed in a Championship side chasing top two and Jackson is one hell of a worker. There was also Buabo who looks like he could be a decent prosepct, but he was very much flung in as an all hands of deck stopgap.

Kieffer Moore has been exceptional as has Al-Hamadi who looks right at home in the Championship and looks like he has a high ceiling. Jackson is fine as a third choice striker.

Moore especially is just perfect for players like Chappers to work off and find those little pockets of space.

Al-Hamadi, my word, he looks a player.

What a strange half!
at 20:53 14 Feb 2024

We couldn't get near them for 15 minutes and they battered us.

Then we clicked into gear and everything started to come off.

Hutch has been excellent in what looks like a free roam role when we have the ball.

A little bit of chaos...
at 17:09 3 Feb 2024

Playing Moore in that second half allowed us to play with a bit 'Moore' chaos. Jackson was utterly lost in that first half, especially going 2-0 down so early.

As soon as Moore came on, I think it took less that 30 seconds for the Preston defence to start having a few problems.

We actually now have a target for crosses plus his holdup play is excellent.

First half was awful. Second half was much, much better.

We need to stop fannying around with the ball at the back when it's not on. Morsy got given a few hospital passes today.

2024 Book Thread
at 08:05 30 Jan 2024

I'm currently reading the first in the Harry Bosch series by Michael Connolly. Enjoying it immensely after being unsure of it for the first 50 or so pages.

Also have started Wheel of Time book 13. Two books left to go now and it's been a mixed ride to be honest.

Another series I've been enjoying is CJ Box's Joe Pickett series. I've read the first two over Christmas and thought they were excellent. They're about a game warden set in rural Wyoming. I get a real sense of escapism reading these.

I Randomly found a highlight of the whole move on Youtube last night. My word, I didn't quite realise at the time how champagne-football'esque that goal was.

Best goal I've seen from us for a long time.

Player thoughts
at 22:24 29 Dec 2023

I'll start with the players that came in:

- Williams looked poor. Tired looking and lackadaisical on the ball at times.
- Ball is a safe pair of hands. Lacks the marauder mentality of Morsy.
- Humprhies did alright in the second half when it looked like he was told to hug the line and break forward. I think he needs a loan to a League 1 team to be playing central rather than auxiliary left back.
- Ladapo had one good chance and then looked poor throughout.
- Hutch had one of those games where nothing really came off for him. His crossing was really, really poor. It's all well and good having the tricks to beat your man, but there needs to be an opportunity created. Even if it's a cross where the defender has to head away. Too many went out of play or were easy for Begovic to claim.

The regulars:

- Hladky did everything that was asked at him as per usual. He's excellent at that sweeper keeper role
- Wolfie was also excellent througout.
- Burgess defensively was great. More misplaced balls than usual going forward.
- Luongo was fine.
- I'm going to place Harness and Chaplin in the 'Not done any favours by the frontman' group. Hirst brings others into play so, so well. Ladapo unfortunately didn't do that tonight.

Subs:

- Jackson brought energy straight away. Ran the lines well but couldn't find a cross in a church.
- Taylor was busy. Like him a lot.
- Clarke did quite well. No complaints there.
- Buabo did his job pretty well. Made the ball stick and looked to bring others into play.
- Aluko had a few nice touches as expected but came on too late to make a difference.

One of those games where too many enforced changes definitely effected the flow of the team. A point isn't awful in the grand scheme of things, especially with 75% of our main front line out along with our assist master.

January transfer window is going to be interesting!

How do we judge a footballing career?
at 08:43 11 Dec 2023

After a recent thread about Kelvin Phillips, it got me thinking about footballing careers.

In a lot of job sectors, many people want to progress from a financial standpoint. A quick google suggests that Phillips is currently on 150k per week. However, from a footballing standpoint, you could suggest that his career has massively stalled at Man City (which sounds crazy considering they've been the best team in world football). He's in essence, a very expensive substitute that doesn't really get used much. Whereas when he was at Leeds, he was a crucial cog in the way they played.

But from a financial standpoint, he's got the best contract he's ever going to get bar some ridiculous Middle East offer. So he's done very, very well.

It depends on how you look at things. I think the majority of fans will look at it from a footballing acclaim side as people remember the good players rather than the good contracts (although there have been some right crazy ones!).

And that's not even taking into account individual performances, International games, community projects etc.

It comes around again to Jordan Henderson's Saudi move. Financially, the contract is ridiculous and set for life and then some. But now his reputation has been tarnished by the hypocrisy. Reuben Neves at least mentioned that the money was excellent (as well as the usual soundbite about it being a project).

Ridiculous career resurgence.

What it does go to show is that there are players out there that have perhaps been written off that can still do it.

Tuanzebe will be the next one at this rate!

Cameron Humphreys
at 10:09 10 Nov 2023

I've been interested in his development over this past year.

He came in and played alongside Morsy in League 1 when our midfield were dropping like flies. Did okay to start, but was perhaps playing too many games too soon and looked gassed towards his run in the team which was to be expected.

Then he played a little further forward for a few cup games and looked pretty decent in that role.

Now being used as a backup left back.

Where do we see him being in January (here or a loan) and playing in what position?
