USA have won their appeal to extradite Assange 10:37 - Dec 10 with 716 viewsElderGrizzly

Decision now with Priti Patel...

The right decision. His 'work', whatever wrapper it is put in put the lives of hundreds of very dedicated people at risk.

Should make sending that bint who killed the lad on the motorbike the other way as part of the deal.

She'll do it. And will do so under the, "Costing us a fortune", defence.

Don’t be silly, the ‘special relationship’ only works one way.

Disagree on balance. However loathsome the individual might be this is a political extradition which is prohibited and there is no way the USA would allow the same process if the roles were reversed.

Still massively problematic for the concept of governments being held to account by journalists.

Revealing deep secrets may have put hundreds at risk, having these kinds of deep secrets puts hundreds of thousands of lives at risk. Let alone setting a new standard for the truths journalists are allowed to uncover.

It's a very tricky issue.

Not good for governments to try to hide wrongdoing. But having no secret diplomacy at all is a problem, both in terms of the willingness to share sensitive information (without the risk of it becoming common knowlege) and the ability to compromise in ways which may be unpopular with domestic opinion.

That's probably why I'm not so keen on the Wikileaks-style indiscriminate data dump. The attacks on civilians, etc., could have been revealed without the other stuff.

I also think it unfortunate that only one "side" has been exposed in this way (altho Bellingcat has gone some way to redressing the balance).

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

True. But the US throwing their weight around with impunity has led directly or indirectly to millions of deaths in the post-war era. Plus some pretty horrific regimes being in power.

Russia, China and others haven’t been better – far from it – but more transparency and accountability would be better for the world. And dare I say it, countries like the US and the UK in the long run.

Some of that comes down to effective electoral reform (a moot point in Russia and China, I know). That will increase the transparency if we had not only the electorate calling for more accountability, but multiple parties in coalition less willing for stuff to be brushed under the carpet.
