California dreaming 08:38 - Dec 10 with 3898 views | bluelagos | According to google maps, there's a bit of Ipswich, near the hospital called California. Genuinely. Wondering if there are any other unusual named areas of towen? *I sometimes think I missed a vocation on local radio.

Tbf I only ever lived 12 months in Ipswich and that was on Norwich Road. But my knowledge of Lagos suburbs is quite advanced :-)

100% true. Apparently the one in Lagos was named by settlers from Whitton seeking a better life.

California dreaming on 08:56 - Dec 10 with 2382 views | footers | There are also the California cliffs in Kessingland, which were named that after one of the locals went gold prospecting out west and came back with a relative fortune. Local rumours were that there was a gold nugget the size of a fist he buried somewhere along the coast... I'll see if I can find the chap's name later on.

California dreaming on 09:10 - Dec 10 with 2341 views | Steve_M | Named because it was constructed at the same time as the California gold rush apparently. There's also Castle Hill, misleadingly named after the remains of a Roman villa were found there in, I think, the 1930s.

The name Castle Hill actually comes from a farm Castlehill Farm that was in the same location. Of course the farm itself might have been named for the memory of the villa that used to be up there.

There is a Boss Hoggs truck stop at the Copdock junction of the A12. Boss Hall itelf seems to be a site of some antiquity, it is labelled with a fancy olde englande style font on the 1896 map.

California dreaming on 09:34 - Dec 10 with 2230 views | Keno | It is a little know historical fact that that that area got its name through a misunderstanding, After the Pilgrim Fathers landed on Plymouth Rock two of the young lads set off to seek their fame and fortune in Hollywood. One of them promised his girlfriend Callie he would let her know when they arrived. After a few months of trekking across the the states and a trip down Route 66 they arrived and the young sent a text to his young lady and waited for her to call back. A few days went by and his friend asked "did Callie phone ya?" A local Indian over heard this and thought that sounded like a good name to call the place. (Keno is bored but happy to share more historical facts) ((like do you know how Henry VIII's 2nd wife for her name?))

I have heard the same thing about the name of Castle Hill, but I think it is more likely that the farm and the hill it stands on was named from memory of the old villa. The first real evidence of roman habitation there was actually unearthed at the farm in 1854.

For my money, it’s the most overrated kebab shop in Ipswich - they use pre-bagged salad for goodness sake. Ipswich Kebab on Bramford Road however... *chefs kiss*
