Next leader of the 3 major parties 23:11 - Dec 12 with 9196 viewstractordownsouth

Started a thread similar to this for the next Labour leader pre- election, when I was expecting a Tory majority and a change in Labour Leader.

Who do you think will be the next leader of the 3 main ( English) parties?

Conservative: Boris Johnson
Labour: Tom Watson
Liberal Democrat: Jo Swinson

I was tempted to suggest Amber Rudd as next Tory leader, however her current sub-1000 majority makes it unlikely and I feel as if Watson would be as likely an option as any ( perhaps Starmer also) to unite the Momentum and Centrist wings of the party.

Given the way Momentum are treating centrists and trying to expunge them from the NEC and the party as a whole, that will take some uniting!

Can’t see any change of leader until 2019/20 though until Brexit has been delivered?

Conservative: Boris Johnson
Labour: No idea
UKIP: Nigel Farage

I think Brexit will be watered down to the extent that UKIP will get a big surge in support and Farage will return. They will become the third party. The Liberals' main strategy of being pro EU would be irrelevant if Brexit was sufficiently watered down.

Truly impaired.

As someone who was previously left wing who now identifies as a Liberal Democrat/ New Labourite ( much like yourself I believe), I'm getting quite worried by this purge within Labour. The tactics used by momentum are very frustrating - both sides of the party need to recognise that they need each other for Labour to win an election.

A lot of the UKIP membership resigned as a result of Henry Bolton being elected recently. Despite detesting the bloke, I appreciate Nige's communicatory ability but they'd be starting from such a low base I doubt they could regain as much vigour as before and even then they only gained 2 seats.

4,000,000 votes at their peak. 17,400,000 voted for Brexit. Farage could likely win a lot of votes if he makes people feel like they've been betrayed.

One of those isn't a credible political party. It's the worst office party you've ever been to and which is unending, veering between comedy and tragedy, but wreaking havoc on all in the vicinity.

But boris may well end up in charge of it.

I say 'in charge'.....

I meant for the party but he may well do if he stands in a strong leave area and convinces people they've been betrayed.

I have a feeling Boris wont make it to the top job.

Cons: Priti Patel (yes, despite it all), heavily supported by JRM (who will not be in the running)

Lab: John McDonnell, I fear. Would prefer a Starmer, Hilary Benn or Dan Jarvis, but sadly the wiser heads are being purged.

Lib: Doesn't really matter does it? I've lost track of who is left.

I suspect the next leader of the Conservative party may be someone currently well under the (public) radar - much as Cameron was before about 2004.

Little bit unfair on son of a toolmaker and a nurse, Keir Starmer there.

Labour will find it difficult to find a replacement for Corbyn, as he is more of a 'cult hero' than a leader. He has made a career of rebelling.... although now he doesnt stand for rebels in his party.

Tom Watson is too mainstream and wont have the same appeal.

Cons - Should be Ruth Davidson, although she says that she doesnt want it.

Lib Dems: Doesnt matter, forever tainted by the coalition.

What needs to happen is for someone to start a new centre ground political party that doesnt have the baggage of the cons / labs.

He already leads the Labour party!!

Corbyn is his puppet. The 'friendly face' of labour, but really cut from the same cloth.
