Boris Johnson and the Russians 13:34 - Nov 19 with 1402 views | itfcjoe | From Twitter feed of Carole Cadwalladr https://www.theguardian.com/media/2019/nov/17/boris-johnson-met-alexander-lebede BREAKING: Boris Johnson flew to Italy without his security detail & met ex-kGB agent 2 days after NATO summit to discuss Russia sanctions. Guardian reported previously how Johnson attended party at Evgeny Lebedev’s Italian palazzo. This was him alone & looking like ‘he was about to be sick on tarmac’. Today we report that earlier that day Evgeny’s father, Alexander, an ex-KGB agent, flew in from Moscow to meet him Here’s what @Billbrowder says about ex-KGB agents: ‘There’s no such thing as an ex-KGB agent.’ Alexander Lebedev retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the London station. He lives in Moscow & runs businesses across Russia. To do so, he must be loyal to Putin, says Browder This is where Boris Johnson was that Friday. At NATO summit on Russia’s ‘reckless & destabilising’ activity, as foreign secretary in midst of Skripal crisis. Incredibly, he then slipped his security detail & flew to Russian’s house to meet ex-KGB agent. This man is now our PM The recklessness of this is off the charts. Russia had just deployed a banned chemical weapon on Britain’s streets. A woman would later die. Britain responded by expelling 23 Russian spies. Boris Johnson was foreign secretary. Dealing with this was *literally* his job. Alexander Lebedev had been in Russia-occupied Crimea earlier that week according to his Instagram. He has repeatedly defended Russia’s illegal annexation of the territory & runs businesses there. When @lukeharding1968 asked him if was with Johnson that weekend, he denied it.

Hopefully he will be held to account for any wrongdoing far better than Trump has been. "Russia had just deployed a banned chemical weapon on Britain’s streets." There are a number of posters on here who don't believe Russia even did that. SB

It seems that Trump and Johnson are cut from the same cloth, and very easy for the Russians to get one over on - just put some beautiful women in front of them at a party. The release of the Russia investigation being quashed until after the election is just mind-blowing.

Boris Johnson and the Russians on 14:28 - Nov 19 with 1240 views | Kievthegreat | Slightly tangential, but Aaron Banks Twitter has been hacked and it appears Carole Cadwalladr has been sent his DMs. IF (and it's a big if) they get published, could be massive!

Wow. That could be fun. Bid you see Toby Young apparently got outed as the owner of basically a racist troll account on Twitter yesterday? All very circumstantial stuff, but amusing nonetheless.

Assuming it's all true data, it could be a moment to grab some popcorn. Especially as several Tory MPs being implicated in courting (or being courted) by Banks.

The immediate sense is that people are sharing any old sh1t and claiming it is from Banks. THat muddies things and makes any really interesting stuff have a lower impact. Given Wigmore's Twitter behaviour - issuing threats all over the place - it does look like a real leak. Kind of ironic that Banks and Wigmore are getting upset about stolen data though.

As highlighted quite neatly by Peter Oborne yesterday - https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/nov/18/boris-johnson-lying-media (For those who've already lost the argument, yes I know it's in the Guardian, but Oborne has been a lifelong Tory). Getting off the Russians for a minute (which we should do really, the heat needs to be kept on that Russian interference report), but this analysis of the election coverage in the media was interesting. No wonder the Tories are ahead in the polls. PM receiving the most media coverage and boy is the media skewed towards positive stories aroud the Tories and negative snears towards labour. You can't have an effective democracy when people are being fed lies and misleading information. https://www.lboro.ac.uk/news-events/general-election/report-1/#section-5

It helps when you're fighting an election to be mates with the top news editors of a country's media. That's where Corbyns going wrong.

On top of Oborne and others' recent criticism of the No10 sources as client journalism, exposing the cosy collusion between so-called independent journalists and politicians on the wider scale will be a massive boost for democracy. The UK has got the least trusted media in the West for a reason — and arguably the least trusted and most incompetent politicians too as a direct result of that.

I agree with a lot of what Oborne writes here about UK political coverage but he has some large blind spots when it comes to Russia and Syria himself.

You can extend that over the past 5 years too. Apparently the defence is that the media are just reporting what other people have said that is negative ... but that's not the same thing as just uncritically repeating it, surely!?? We have a media where even the supposedly balanced centre of the BBC and Guardian is not really fit for purpose in the modern information age. Despite the efforts of a few journalists like Callawadr and Oborne who still ask the tough questions and care about the answers.

twitter will get all in a tizz and people will nudge nudge and suggest very important things are going to be revealed. And then they won't and Boris will win the election. Then Trump will get reelected. And on we go. Sigh.

Where did you get the numbers from? Wiki says it's a much lower %: "As Editor-in-Chief Dmitriy Muratov said in an interview, that was published on YouTube by Novaya Gazeta on 28 January 2017,[27] Newspaper's organisation had 76% of shares, Alexander Lebedev owned 14% of shares, Mikhail Gorbachev had 10%." It also shows a circulation of less then 200,000 so pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things. You are right though, two of it's reporters have been killed and it's pretty vocal against Putin. SB

Wiki - Alexander Lebedev. Also a journo and an editor at that paper that he owns were threatened and according to wiki the style of the attack resembled others linked to a Russian businessman with ties to the Kremlin and Putin. What a strange way perhaps then for the Kremlin to behave towards newspaper staff employed by someone that according to Bill Browder is loyal to Putin! He is en ex KGB agent who is critical of Putin.
