Never a left back.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Remember that time Jewell said he had told him he was going to live in New York so we released him and he popped up at Palace a couple weeks' later and played 200 games for them?

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Gotta respect a footballer who quotes Nietzsche in his twitter bio tbf. No wonder he ran rings round Jewell.

Don't forget that this left us with one senior central defender too. Not like we've repeated that sort of failing since though.

Like Gareth McAuley, had a long career in the Premier League despite performing at a very inconsistent level for us.

Don't be silly, such mistakes would never be made at so professional a club!

Actually, didnt Jewell replace him with Ingimarsson who just so happened to be staying at the same hotel Jewell was on holiday at?

Tom Eastman is a versatile experienced defender now, we could do with him.

Think this is another story which seems to have had some rewriting over the years. Delaney's departure had been set up to happen for a while, he wanted to go as he was fed up of not being in the team, the US thing was just something he mentioned in passing as a possible future plan rather than being what he specifically said was his next step. Indeed, Crystal Palace had already been mentioned as his potential next destination.

He was told he could go when someone else was lined up to come in. Alan Tate was due to come in on loan from Swansea the following week once that window had opened but someone got injured at the Swans and it fell through. Should have made sure the signing was 100 per cent before releasing DD obviously, but fairly typical of the sort of luck Jewell had here.

Delaney won most, perhaps all, his Ireland caps at left-back under Giovanni Trapattoni so I would guess his performances here were untypical of his left-back stylings over his career. Not sure he was helped by the rather less than disciplined Lee Martin playing in front of him.

Ivar Ingimarsson arrived at the beginning of 2011-12, a year before Delaney left. He was McAuley's replacement.

Remember Ivar and Delaney playing alongside each other in our opening fixture away at Bristol that season, during which they worked well together and the former had a good performance (it was just after that he was injured in training and never the same again).

Good Lord! Whatever is it?
