Good piece on the Titan submersible here 11:01 - Jul 4 with 1718 viewsSteve_M

"The primary task of a submersible is to not implode. The second is to reach the surface, even if the pilot is unconscious, with oxygen to spare. The third is for the occupants to be able to open the hatch once they surface. The fourth is for the submersible to be easy to find..."

"And now you have the hand controller talking to a Wi-Fi unit, which is talking to a black box, which is talking to the sub’s thrusters. There were multiple points of failure.” "

Every responsible & independent-minded engineer who had anything to do with it had always said it wasn't fit for purpose or safe, and needed modifications to make it so - but they were always either ignored, over-ruled or sacked.

Jesus, at the very least Rush comes across in that piece as reckless. But in truth, utterly dangerous. I'm amazed he was allowed to get away with it. It will ultimately lead to changes in maritime law regarding private submersibles I think.

Shame he died in a way, because Rush deserves to face justice. Although given how he deliberately positioned his company outside of any jurisdiction I wonder what could have been done anyway if he hadn't have been on the sub. What an ars*hole.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

He evidently went to great lengths to avoid any kind of regulation or oversight, from using Bahamas registration to the "mission specialist" designation and waivers to sacking/suing anyone who raised questions.

Comes across as an out-of-control wealthy egotist and the very definition of "too clever for his own good".

The problem with laws being that nobody has juristiction over the ocean deeps (they cover interactions between vessels which are registered in specific locations). Plus powerful interests want to keep open the possibility of plundering them, either for minerals or salvage from shipwrecks.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

What was always the most baffling thing was the lack of redundancies in some of the systems. Sadly this ham-fisted and ill-fated venture has put deep sea exploration move back in time.

It won’t lead to changes. It took a lot of money for the US to bribe other member states just to get ISPS through so quickly after 9/11.

ISM code (1993) came about after Herald of Free Enterprise (1987)

MARPOL came about, and keeps being added to, after mainly numerous oil spills.

The maritime industry is a very slow moving reactive industry.

Maritime law isn’t like anything else in the world. It requires member states to accept it.

We have flags of convenience, where ships are flagged under certain countries flags that have lower standards than others.
