we were encouraged to vote Tory, the party that looks after the military (they didn't). Today Sky News are reporting that service personnel are being forced to use food banks. Rool britanya.

It doesn't really surprise me that this was part of your service indoctrination, but it is very sad that "they" think that fighting to make Johnson, Mogg, Hancock, etc richer at the expense of the majority in the country is patriotic.

I'd not heard of that before. How were you encouraged? Was it overt, or a bit of gentle nudging? Surprised that isn't a thing that's made the news before. As you say, depressing that yet another professional under this Government has no choice but to use food banks.

What do you mean by "pro-military"? This is not about funding Trident, it's about feeding service personnel.

Obviously it was never written in Standing Orders, but it was certainly encouraged by word of mouth, from above. This was many years ago and I don't know how things are these days.

If by that you mean supportive financially, I suspect their ideology of cutting costs applies to the forces too. I wouldn't at all be surprised to see a similar pattern of real term cuts (or at least below average rises) to both wages and defence budgets overall. But I haven't looked, so could be wrong.

I have delightful visions of you standing there in the jungle with a red-faced, sweating Windsor Davies bellowing in your ear "Now see you vote for those flabby, kleptomaniac, unpatriotic, filthy Tory serial liars lovely boy, or I'll have you on khazi-wallah duties for the REST OF YOUR CAREER!"

Have you ever listened to "the rest is politics" podcast?

I think Alistair Campbell comes across pretty well in that. Very reasoned, left wing guy. I like Rory Stewart as well to be fair.

Anyway - I think there's an episode on there about Iraq if you ever fancy listening to it.

This can't be true,

My old man served for 30 years, I know many people who served and are still serving, and they all had free choice to vote for whoever they wanted, the only people probably encouraged were the officers who were loaded so it would benefit them...

Also wouldn't believe that service personnel are being forced to use foodbanks, mainly because if they need to, most service personnel can visiit the foodhalls to get munch

The majority of ex-military and ex-police I have known, or heard, tend to hold right-wing views. Work it out from there.

Does he say sorry for being complicit in killing all those people? Or does he talk about alcoholism.

He talks about Hussain's history of developing and using chemical weapons against his own people, invasion of Kuwait, kicking out UN inspectors and a fear that Iraq was becoming a rogue state and a real threat. And 9/11 meant that they couldn't risk containment as an option anymore.

Rory Stewart challenges him a lot on a paranoia that was built on around this. And how the US Neo cons had a delusion that democracy would come to Iraq and the Middle East in general.

He says that Blair wanted a UN resolution but ultimately came into line with US not to upset them and cause he did feel the first paragraph was relevant.

Rory says this was a catastrophic lack of judgement and terrible decision.

But essentially he only tries to justify the thinking at the time.

Its a really good podcast series though.

2 Episodes.

It's been a month since I listened to them but from what I recall Campbell is very confident and single minded in making the decision to invade, which is covered in the first episode, but is very much on the defensive as Rory Stewart tears him apart over the lack of planning for what happens once Saddam is gone.

There is also a very good exchange between Rory Stewart and Jonathan Powell at 33.04 on the subject. One of the few times I've heard Rory Stewart get angry.

https://uk-podcasts.co.uk/podcast/leading/jonathan-powell-how-to-negotiate-with-

Of course Rory Stewart has personal experience of Iraq.

Given the military is the state and Labour should be more 'pro-state, you'd expect better support them really

It's an open goal really, it would confuse the flag shaggers, claiming to be patriots

The Tories claiming to be patriots, is a great trick really, given the national assets they have sold off over the years

They'd privatise the NHS, BBC and perhaps even the Royal Family if they could get away with it

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!
