Probably finds larger ones too annoying & restrictive. When his game is all about his quick feet and from a young age he's got used to be hacked down.
Wasn't long ago that defenders used to wear ones with those big old ones with ankle protector bits on them that strapped around the bottom of your foot. I've always been a slip in guy and can 100% see where JG is coming from, you don't want the shin pad anywhere near your knee or ankle. |  |

I had a good laugh with a young whippersnapper in the Nike shop last time I went shin pad shopping. He assured me that they don't make "old fashioned" pads anymore and tried to sell me on the little dainty ones. I said I can't wear them and take myself seriously as a tough tackling enforcer. I ended up getting some at Adidas and the next time I went in the Nike shop he approached me to ask if I'd been successful in buying antique pads. He'll go far that boy. | |
