In my opinion that's 62 NO's and 33 YES's based on a mix of whether I think they would be a starter in the majority of the mid-table teams in this division at the time we signed them (and some like Anderson, Tabb and Hunt, are generous on account of how well they did for us).

That means that in my opinion 2/3 of Mick's signings haven't been good enough to add anything to the team even if we are aiming for mid table. Interestingly, almost all the ones he's spent money on (except Ward and Wordsworth imo) he's bought half decent players.

The last 2 seasons have smacked of Mick trying to stay in his cushy job and looking to short term results that suggest he's doing a good job, rather than any attempt at building the club long term.

Understandable from his viewpoint, but not good enough for ITFC.

Let's not be silly about this, with a small number of exceptions if they haven't made the cut they've been bounced back out of the squad in pretty short order. There's plenty of sticks to beat the current setup with without leveling criticism at low-risk short-term gambles and necessary stopgaps.

But we went from picking up Murphy, McGoldrick, Berra and Skuse for nothing, as out of contract players to getting who in for free?

We have moved onto the likes of Feeney and Gleeson. Plenty of decent players have been available at this level but for some reason we've not gone for any of them over the last couple of seasons.

I think you're cherrypicking more than a little — or rather dangleberry-picking in this case.

From when we spent some dosh on Knudsen (which might in itself signify a change in focus) we've brought in fewer players overall and a lot of signings have involved more of an investment in transfer fees. Mainly because we're now filling out the squad with our own products.

The squad Mick inherited prompted a huge amount of churn because of its age and cost. And even then the squad was low on numbers.

Carayol and Adeyemi were free. So was Pitman. According to that list.

But that's not the point.

When you're shopping in the bargain basement, there will be a lot of speculative signings who cost very little. Can't really see the problem with that.

It's like the debate on here a couple of days ago about a certain Palace player who we signed on loan a couple of seasons ago, on a pay as you play deal, while he was recovering from injury.
"BUT WE SIGNED AN INJURED PLAYER!!!"

So what? It could have paid off. It didn't come to anything. But he cost us nothing. Where's the problem?

Depends on how you view the season. Every season's followed the same pattern. Low-cost/free key signings over summer, inevitable injury problems, low-cost cast-offs in January as stopgaps on loans or short-term deals. You can't compare Feeneys and Gleesons to McGoldricks and Berras so much as you can to Chaplows and Greens in MM's early days.
