I see another dinghy has tragically cost the lives of more illegals reaching our shores, one being a young child. Whilst this is very sad I am at a loss as to why instead of trying to find ways of either paying the French to prevent these boats and getting laws passed to fly these people to Rwanda why has this Government put more into stopping the traffickers. Everything is a bodge from allowing water Company's to pump sewage into rivers to paying motorist compensation for damage to vehicles instead of fixing potholes and whilst we are on about that why do the highways people fill in one pothole and leave another a few feet away ?

What?! Some ghoulish segue from a child's death to moaning about potholes. On ignore.

No child is an "illegal".

Probably for the best. Someone will be along in a minute to tell us to 'be kind' to the poster equating a hole in a road on a par with dead children.

'Illegals'. Very sympathetic language there towards some dead children.

Not sure I can see the connection between a tragedy in the channel and pot holes.

With regards to the former in addition to the lost lives 47 were rescued. Over 50 others were allowed to continue their journey, presumably escorted until they were in U.K. waters and then brought ashore by Border Force.

I'm guessing you wrote that on your phone while driving and went over a massive pothole, because that's a car crash of a post!

3 and a half years ago, and I think about those boats regularly. I hope they are prospering, living a peaceful happy life.

Search and Rescue by NewcyBlue 30 Sep 2020 17:21
At 1630GMT we received a call from a search and rescue aircraft, they had sighted small craft heading North towards the Canary Islands.

At the time I was 54m above sea level changing signal lights on the signal mast.

I was radioed and informed that I was needed on the bridge. The radars were started, which were turned off as I was up the signal mast.

After we were given the position of the boats we proceeded at full speed.

Approximately 36 minutes later we were in sight of two small boats. We called Las Palmas Marine Rescue Coordination Centre and informed them of what we had found. They told us that we should escort the boats North to the safety of a Spanish search and rescue vessel.

We were told that if necessary we may be required to rescue the persons on the boats.

As medical Officer I had preparations to make.

- The hospital was prepared
- First aid bag and oxygen was prepared
- Covid precautions for my crew was prepared
- A camera and notepad and pen was prepared.

I’m also in charge of life saving appliances such as life rafts and boats. I then proceeded to prepare

- The rescue boat, including inflatable life jackets for the rescue boat crew
- lifebuoys were stood by
- transponders for search and rescue that show up on the radar.
- Portable VHF radio for the rescue boat crew
- Additional lines that may be needed for towing the craft

After preparing this, I took two of my crew to lock the accommodation down, followed by all other accessible spaces on board.

The place was that we would keep the migrants in one place, we have to ensure the safety of the crew as well as the migrants. We also have to ensure the security of the vessel.

After doing a couple of meal reliefs to ensure other officers had some dinner, I went for some rest. There was nothing more that I could do.

We got the migrant boats to safety, in all there were four boats.

There is an underlying point here. If the UK Government, rather than populist stuff about Rwanda and "illegals", concentrated on getting the asylum system working right (including funding and staffing levels), there would be proper routes into the country for refugees and we could actually process their applications rather than keeping them uselessly locked up for years in old military camps or on boats.

Don't give the Tories ideas. Before long they'll be proposing to fill in the potholes with migrant children.

That isn't a vote winner amongst the unthinking knuckle draggers.

Inability to process applications for asylum within a reasonable timescale is a disgrace.

The populist stuff about Rwanda and "illegals" is a sop to stop the Tories leaking more votes.

They’re people just like you and I, no person can be illegal.

Shocking use of language when people have just died.

Yep.

It annoys me quite a lot when Tory politicians have used the phrase disrupting the business model of the traffickers.

The real way to disrupt the business model isn’t faffing about incompetently on the last leg of journey.

It is providing real options for humans as close to where the human needs it. When a person is fleeing for their life the choice should be hmmm, which is my nearest safe place, that UN place over the border, or the consulate over that border, rather than relying on a local trafficker gang exploiting them and trying to get across multiple countries and sea crossings.

Just need a three word slogan that fits underneath a Lectern.

Then there's the little matter of cutting or diverting overseas aid budgets. That used to be something which could be used to keep places more stable, to alleviate famine and disasters. To stop people having to move in the first place.

People saying "charity begins at home" are missing the second half of the original quote - "but should not end there".
