Things I miss at the footer ... on 10:07 - Feb 13 by Blue_badge | This thread has given me a "flashback", a long buried memory from my teens... if you are old enough to have been there (no looking it up on YT) can you remember: Final game of 67/68 season, top of the league confirmed - what song was played while we ran on the pitch in our delight? |
I was there but can't remember what was played. I'll guess it was Congratulations. i was at Pompey the previous week when it was played as we clinched premotion.

I'd forgotten about butchers coats, though I've seen pictures. I think it maybe was just slightly before my time. Was it 'a thing' for long, or just a one-season fad? Was it big in Ipswich?
Things I miss at the footer ... on 14:24 - Feb 13 with 1161 views | Heathlander | Bit weird but the new silk scarves smelt so good. i can almost smell it now :). I had one with Ipswich town on one side and Churchmans on the other. Old football smelt of cigars and beer breath. Used to have a crate to watch the game and we'd push through the crowds to get a space. Vouchers given out for cup games. For the FA Cup final you would have had to have quite a few. Gerry Harrison and Match of the Week. After Farming Diary on a Sunday. Match of the Day after Starsky and Hutch. A treat being allowed to stay up to watch it. Ipwich being the best team in Europe.... I miss that. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I know (knew) him. He was a line supervisor at a factory I worked during the summer in the mid-90s in Ipswich. Used to print and pack Trivial Pursuit, in virtually every language in Europe.

Things I miss at the footer ... on 15:55 - Feb 13 with 1092 views | OldFart71 | Standing halfway up the North Stand behind the goal with my dear dad in the late fifties. Travelling on a coach to away matches singing all the way. Tears welling in my eyes in the 80-81 season when the crowd sang "You'll never walk alone" even Churchmans joined in. Seeing all the fantastic footballers we have had over the years from Ray Crawford, Frank Brogan, Danny Hegan to Paul Mariner, Beattie Hunter, Burley, Mills. The two David Johnsons. Colin Viljoen, Diesel Morris, Brian Talbot, Muhren and Tyssen. Sir Bobby, Sir Alf. What a fantastic club we have.

Things I miss at the footer ... on 06:35 - Feb 13 by franz_tyson | Yep, that air horn was iconic. Would be good to know where that tune came from. Good to hear it on old YT videos from the glory days. Sets of images of the red and white panelled footballs and Gerry Harrison. |
The tune is 'La Cucaracha' I found out the story behind this a couple of years ago...A lady called Sheila spoke on Radio Suffolk and said that the horn was actually sounded by her brother who watched the games from his wheelchair. He had Motor Neurone Disease and because he was unable to clap or cheers the goals, he would sound his air horn attached to his wheelchair when we scored... [Post edited 13 Feb 16:57]

But I’ll add outfield players having to go in goal due to keepers getting injured or sent off. And replica kits lasting 2-3 seasons.
