He's just said that on Marr as well.

Ridiculous mixed messages from the government. Other ministers saying totally the opposite thing.

He was on straight after the modeller who said we could see 2000 hospitalisations a day, let's hope that's a very worst case scenario.

And hope that others wear masks as well which of course is outside of your control.

It wouldn’t have been hard to keep the mask rule for another month to see what happens to cases in that time with the other measures going.

Got to hand it to Boris, he wants to see his variant spreading doesn’t he. What a bellend

Yep. And their defence will be “look at our vaccine programme”

While Covid ravages hospitals again and hospital waiting lists top 13m from 4 million now.

And so simple too, to keep them in certain indoor spaces.

It looks like private companies are doing their work for them with the majority of airlines, buses and train companies saying it will be a condition of travel.

I can certainly see a market for restaurants and similar to boast they have a mask policy to attract customers as much as those (Wetherspoons) that will say the opposite.

The ‘killer’ for any business who doesn’t want them will be the increased risk of spikes and local Government will simply shut them down for a period due to track and trace data.

"It looks like private companies are doing their work for them with the majority of airlines, buses and train companies saying it will be a condition of travel."

The worry here is that there will be a certain element who will routinely attempt to use these services (as well as hospitality establishments requiring masks) without masks or distancing just to make a point about government rules and it's likely to cause some issues in my opinion.

The worst case scenario from all of this is only a higher chance that a mutation develops which vaccines don't work against, so there's not really much risk attached.

EG, any idea how seriously scientists think this could happen? Genuine worry or just an outside possibility? If genuine worry why are the government risking it? Money? Surely longer term it would be more financially devastating and would pretty much ruin life for years to come.

Oh there will, but as it forms conditions of travel or your ‘contract’ it supercedes any mask ‘law’.

Given a big enough pool of infection and time it is inevitable a vaccine resistant variant would emerge (it might have already but it might be less transmissible this would have been outcompeted).

That is why we need to vaccinate the world.

Of course we don't know the values for the variables of pool size and time, both could be very large which would be the best case scenario.

Most of the rest of the world is unvaccinated, so endless mutation is probably inevitable.

I am hoping that with each mutation the virus might become less deadly. Isn’t there some thing about viruses evolving to become more transmissible, but less deadly because they don’t want to finish off their host!?

Yes, too deadly you kill off your hosts.

A number of the leading scientists do believe we’ll see vaccine resistant mutations and the more virus in circulation and mixing from different parts of the world is the perfect petri dish to do so

But could they just become things we live with in an open society, like if a totally vaccine resistant flu variant came along for example? Obviously Covid has added long-term risks so the two hypotheticals aren't strictly comparable.

Appreciate you're not a scientist.

My regular haunt in Ipswich is doing the same. Simply, they don't want their staff out at risk by facing punters at the bar. Brave decision, as it will cost them money, but I applaud it, and will make sure they get my beer spend.

There is a general rule about viruses whereby they do mutate to become less deadly but it's not the hard and fast rule that some people tend to throw about on social media.

Viruses like MERS and SARS started off with a far higher mortality rate than C19 and also a far lower R so they for them they would have needed to mutate to become less deadly because they aren't good at infecting - they didn't do this in time and thus they killed off their hosts before they could take hold.

C19 is a bit different, it's highly infectious (R>7 for the delta variant) but not as deadly thus it can kill but it will infect a lot of people before that. There is huge scope for C19 to become more deadly because with an R>7 a host can infect people pretty rapidly and then be killed off. In the end the virus doesn't care about it's grandchildren, just replicating and infecting - once that is does it doesn't care about the host.

It's so much more infectious now than it was that it has some scope for various mutations both more deadly and less deadly.

Maybe someone will have some papers which explain it better they could post.

Whateley just seems to be one of a whole generation of modern time ministers with no discernable talent who say the first thing that comes into their head/ hope it will stick.

If the guidance is going to be that we are expected to wear masks in indoor spaces, you really have to question why the working from home requirement is being removed. The idea of wanting everybody back in their offices at once, plus the mask expectation, simply makes no sense whatsoever.
