Tier 3 up here in Lancashire and Greater Manchester later... on 11:44 - Oct 14 with 1639 views | StokieBlue | The MP for Ipswich was on the World Tonight last night and was fairly forcefully making the point that putting Ipswich under lockdown as per Starmers plan wouldn't help Liverpool in any way. I do have some sympathy for that position given the very low cases in Suffolk but ultimately people travel around and a blanket lockdown is easy for everyone to understand - there is no ambiguity to exploit. Edit: Just seen the Liverpool mayor has condemned people partying last night before the measures come in - some people really aren't taking things onboard which will end up leading to a blanket lockdown. There's a story in the EADT today of a hotel in Aldeburgh which has stopped taking bookings as suddenly a lot of Mancs and Scousers have been trying to book rooms. The tier 3 thing should at least contain a provision to stay local as they are doing in Wales.

Wonder if there was any real attempt in Liverpool to enforce the laws last night. It really isn’t enough to trust people to obey the rules they need to be enforced. Interesting change rumoured for Northern Ireland. Going to be against the law to sell alcohol in shops etc after 8pm. Something we should have done at the same time as introducing the 10pm pub closure. We also ought to have clamped down on street gatherings more after pubs closed. Would we need a circuit break if more effort had been made in the worst affected areas to ensure rules were followed.

It's something they've been doing over in Portugal for some time now. Whilst the Portuguese certainly don't have the same drinking culture that we do over here, it does appear to have had the effect of reducing numbers on the streets late at night and maintaining a certain amount of viability for bars, cafes and restaurants.

The Tories find it too difficult to look beyond "Where there's a till, there's a way". It is more economical to the government for regions to remain out of Tier 3 for as long as possible, not so much financial support for business's that are required to close whilst not in Tier 3. Do we know exactly the criteria that has to be met for a region to be moved from Tier 2 to Tier 3 and, more importantly, what that region needs to achieve to come out of Tier 3?

Ultimately though, these measures are failing and will likely result in a lengthy lockdown which will be far, far more damaging in many ways than a 'circuit breaker'.

...pointless exercise there is. My Dad and my mates won't be allowed round my gaff, but I'll be able to go down the boozer and get hammered with them. Utterly ridiculous. I mean it's a result that I can use "seeing my Dad" as an excuse to the wife.......but it's hardly going to stop the spread of Covid.

Think Essex have got a play-off against South-Gloucester for the tier 2 wildcard slot later this week - losers get their gyms shut, winners qualify for a Nations league preliminary qualifying round match against a Serco Test and Trace XI.

I'm assuming it will. Although Essex has some very low rates of infection e.g. Maldon 16.3 they are concerned about how quickly it is gaining momentum. In some cases, Tendering it has tripled over the last fortnight. Nottingham city has one of the highest IR on a par with Liverpool, although they have regions that are relatively low with National comparisons, but they have asked all areas of Nottinghamshire to consider a lockdown. Provisions & regulations are all very well, but many of them are unenforceable e.g. telling people to stay local. A full lockdown is only likely to be effective if it has near 100% compliance & that is unrealistic in a liberal democracy.

QMC has been under constant pressure in the Winter for the last few years. No idea how they'll deal with the normal stuff as well as Covid.

Tier 3 up here in Lancashire and Greater Manchester later... on 10:50 - Oct 15 with 1216 views | StokieBlue | London in Tier 2 from Friday at midnight. Perhaps a touch early, cases still around 100 per 100,000 compared with 700+ in many places up north but don't think many can complain. The rules don't make sense though. Can't meet other households indoors but can go to work where there will be loads of other households indoors. SB

There will always be inconsistencies in rules but the notion must be that the country can't afford to pay umpteen people for doing nothing, so people need to go to work. Meeting other households is desirable but non-essential.
