Yeah, but you dont accept that being a member of a party, and hence a supporter of its policies, that has cut back public spending and imposed austerity on the country whilst at the same time cutting corporation tax is right wing.

If you don't think that the tory party is right wing then it is going to be hard convincing you that his support for it and membership of it, is right wing.

Austerity etc is certainly a fair point although state spending is still vast and growing as is the debt our country is in, but I also think the a party that supports egalitarianism globalisation & neoliberalism so enthusiastically cannot be said to be right wing. It is however important to remember I *also* said "Boris" is a Blairite, and that corporation tax was cut by Gordon Brown.

So "Boris" is "much further to the right" but you cant name one single right wing thing he has done after years as Mayor and an MP, and I am the one saying stupid things? Got it big guy.

His determination to push through Brexit, by altering the withdrawal bill to make it illegal not to extend the transition period beyond 31/12/20 seems rather tight wing to me. His determination to protect the Union also.

Can you answer a question for me? Blair was a red Tory, Cameron was almost as far to the left as Blair. Where do you place Boris Johnson bearing in mind you have already made the ludicrous claim that the Tory party isn’t right wing?

It is an interesting discussion. The terms left wing and right wing are often used without any thought about what they really mean, so this is quite thought provoking.

In the case of Boris Johnson I would say that he is a bit of a mixed bag, he has supported gay marriage, which is socially liberal whilst at the same time expressing conservative views on the same matter - "tank topped bum boys".

His position on Brexit is definitely nationalistic, something which is generally considered to be a right wing position, but he only took that position at the last minute, probably as a strategy ( a succesful one) for advancing his own position.

He has certainly expressed anti-socialist views, so you cant consider him anything other than to be on the right from that regard.

Agree. I asked and was given the answer to another question.

I don't he has done anything which can be classed as 'further to the right".

I'm with you on this one.

Good grief, you are in no position to comment on others making irrelevant statements or comparisons.

You have been excelling in it for months.

I was in a bit of a rush and otherwise distracted, saw that twit's name and mayor and that article sprang to mind.

As for right-wing; this lot seem to like him and as we so often see, you can tell someone by the company and all that...

"Robinson’s supporters heaped praise on the prime minister in a series of comments, with one writing: “Go Boris, f*** the lot of them scumbag traitor bastards.”

Being the figurehead of this government is pretty right-wing in itself.

So he has been an MP for many years, Mayor of London for 8 years, and you can't think of a single right wing thing he has done? And yet you say he is "much further to the right" than Blair?

As mayor targeting all that taxpayers' money on daft projects whereas if there was really that amount available to spend it could have gone on some more, say, left-wing ideals, like helping people who need it.

Millions of pounds wasted on nonsense and people living on the streets in the same very city.

He bought a water cannon as Mayor of London to be used against protesters, though thankfully the law meant he couldn't do so. He stirs up xenophobia constantly and wants to pull back on workers' rights. The suggestion he a not right wing is pretty absurd. His values and principles are a movable feast at times but they're always moving around to the right of the centre ground, just by varying degrees.

Boris Johnson is very hard to put in a box. He has always been very socially liberal. With a positive voting record on LGBT+ rights, backing some key pieces of equality legislation such as allowing gay couples to adopt children. As an MP, he voted to repeal Section 28 in 2003 and to introduce civil partnerships in 2004. As London Mayor he was supporting gay marriage before Cameron became PM.

But then he uses homophobic language such as “bum boys”

He’s always been very comfortable working alongside and promoting people of colour. Yet he has a history of writing racist and deeply offensive articles.

What that tells me is that he may well be socially liberal but he craves power far more than he cares about minorities and is prepared to associate with all manner of racists and far right loons like Steve Bannon if it helps his career path.

Boris Johnson basically stands for Boris Johnson and little else.

Every time I speak to the homeless peeps who live under Finsbury Park's railway bridges about what could most positively benefit them, the one recurring theme that always comes up is a garden bridge.

My god, I've given you an uppie.

Johnson is a narcissistic opportunist and nothing more. A puppet for Cummings and now a couple of twenty-something Aussies from Crosby's lot. Wicked.

Still want to see his hand-painted buses, personally.

I think you and others have backed up my point about "saying" and "doing" and the difference therein, although I appreciate one bleeds into the other. And I agree about him being a power hungry opportunist. All I am really saying is that means he is not an ideologue. If he was this terrible right wing thug everyone talks about we would have evidence for that beyond him telling stupid jokes, writing crap columns, and making tough guy statements like buying a water cannon when he knew he wouldn't be able to use it.

Blair wasnt a red anything. This is a fundamental misunderstanding of who he is and what he did. It's the Tories that became Blairites, which has confused a lot of people.
