Surely the fairest way is a team in the 1st round draw gets a bye to the 2nd round. Possibly our best hope of progress in a cup competition! [Post edited 7 Oct 2019 19:05]

FA Cup 1st round on 19:15 - Oct 7 with 2818 views | xrayspecs | Last season's position seems to carry more weight than current season as it is fixed whereas this season could change week on week. Rotherham (highest placed relegated team from Championship) could be given a bye to the second round. 32 teams will advance from final qualifying. Add in 23 team from L1 (Rotherham given a bye) and 23 from L2 gives 78 teams in R1. 39 winners join Rotherham in R2. Twenty teams then advance to R3 where joined by 44 from Prem and Champ. 64 in R3, 32 in R4 and so on until we win the final... [Post edited 7 Oct 2019 19:17]

The bye system is the only outcome isn't it?

It would either be a blank ball giving their opponents a bye or they give this to the highest ranked team. As per edited post, this would be based on position at the end of last season not this, so Rotherham may skip straight to R2.

The blank ball would make more sense, or just whoever gets drawn out first receives the bye. Gives everyone an equal chance that way. I'm sure the FA will come up with some random system that doesn't make sense to anyone.

The precedent is that Rotherham will get a bye to R2. I am not aware that they have ever had a blank ball in a draw.
FA Cup 1st round on 19:45 - Oct 7 with 2665 views | runaround | About 20 or so years ago Manchester United were withdrawn by FA from the cup due to some tournament abroad. Their number was still in the draw but they then had another draw of teams who lost in second round picking one team, I believe it was Darlington, to take their place. So they could always do that again with all the losing teams from the final qualifying round

You are right, there was a lucky loser. From wiki: The title holders Manchester United, withdrew from the 1999—2000 competition due to their participation in the 2000 FIFA Club World Championship in South America, to take place in early 2000,[1] thus becoming the first FA Cup winners not to defend their title. Despite this being at the request of the Football Association (FA), they received criticism from journalists and television pundits.[2] To keep the competition running smoothly, the FA chose to draw one team from among those lower-division teams defeated in the second round to progress as "lucky losers" to the third.[3] Darlington were the team drawn.[4] Not sure when the decision was taken in relation to the competition. It may have been later than now, so they could not tweak the draw.

Anyone fancy a trip to whyteleafe or Maldon and Tiptree? A few thousand town fans descending on a non league ground could be a good day out.

Unfortunately, the stupid FA no longer divide the 1st & 2nd rounds between North & South, so it will probably be Whitby Town (away) or such like.

Nothing wrong with that, a club like that would be very unique to us. We will definitely draw Fleetwood away.

That appears to be the likely situation. Personally find it a bit odd but it's good that another non league club would get a chance.

I don't for a moment dispute the stupidity of the FA, but compared with cricket's ECB they are fine exemplars of wisdom and far-sightedness.
