It really is highlighting the narrow-minded parochial worldview of a worryingly large number of Brits. Imagine getting up in arms because 2% of their budget is spent on international causes. I doubt many of the angry white people on social media even donated to them anyway, their charity begins at home ethos is usually pretty literal. Our society is horribly divided and sadly it seems to be the inward-looking, mean-spirited bunch that are winning the culture war.

This had passed me by. Just had a read and it's a ridiculous stance to take - the amount of money involved is pretty small and in the end surely richer countries have a duty to help those less fortunate, especially given the historical stances we have taken which have facilitated that position.

People just like to whinge about things. Context is largely ignored nowadays (as seen on this forum daily) and people like to load up on factoids from one side of the debate without considering the subject as a whole.

I do blame social media for a lot of this and nothing is being done to stop it. It's almost vital now that critical thinking along with methods to evaluation sources and information are taught as a proper subject/module at school. It won't happen though.

Agree about the small-mindedness of some of the reaction to this story, but I think you can get an imbalanced impression of what's going on off social media. Most people I meet in real life aren't total wangers, and that even includes people I've met off here!

I like to think that most people when they stop and think about it wouldn't begrudge the RNLI using a tiny fraction of its budget, and more importantly it's world-leading experience, to help save some kids lives overseas.

But it's not exactly a stretch to draw a line from this small-minded mean-spiritedness to our current politics and that's the worrying part. It's not just social media, these kinds of views are driving much of the direction of the country now.

You're being very mean-spirited about the nature of our politics there

You're right of course, there's an underlying ugly side to the discourse these days. Not least because some of those darker, meaner messages are led by our politicians.

This is massively true - I bet about 99% of the people whinging about the RNLI thing probably have never donated to them in their life.

I don't see the need for it to be 'angry white people', I am increasingly finding people of all colours and creeds are just as bad on stuff like this.

But the key is, people complaining about something they don't donate to - if they really don't like this policy then move your donation elsewhere, that's what they should be told - because 99% of them won't donate anyway

We’ve never met, have we?

Agree with the points made here tho. The RNLI are fantastic servants, and as you say, have world-leading experience. I certainly don’t begrudge helping overseas.

I don't see the need for it to be '99%', that seems like a bit of fake statistic to me. Calling you up on that as it is an example of exacerbating an idea or situation that isn't factually correct, something the world is chocked full of right now.

It always does in the real world anyway - angry people get angry, decent people support and the world keeps turning.

Although there is an issue when the left attack things, that those on the right don't step into support because there are maybe too many blowhards on that side of things so they don't get sorted out and supported.

To be entirely frank, I don't really think the left/right thing is a healthy association to apply to this situation, it is making wild assumptions that further fuels tribalism.

Agreed.

But what does it say about our so-called serious politicians and press that they launch the issue by framing it as "funding burkinis for Africans".

We need much, much higher standards in the public domain if we're going to tackle some of the lunacy on social media.

It's not just social media — look at the *newspapers* that are propagating this stuff. The right-wing rags are genuinely ruining the country, probably have done already, there is no other conclusion to draw.

Some of the comments on this tweet are illustrative of the outrage:

Plenty more decent people standing up for them too, which is good to see. I think there is probably a lot more bile on the comments on the original story by the Mail but I can't be doing with that level of gammonista faux moral indignation.

Fine, but be in no doubt as to where the poison is coming from. Social media amplifies it hugely but largely is just a symptom of what is actually going on.
