Do the public need to be exposed to high-level analysis that the vast majority won't understand?
How many of them really need to know that warming in the tropics could lead to wetter summers in the UK? What matters is the bog standard points which are still being vehemently denied by many around the world. If those aren't even hitting home then high level analysis certainly isn't required and can be restricted to the arenas where it does most good.
Given this having someone who "fits and easy media story" who portrays the simple points which need to be grasped and run with is exactly what is required.

i think using celebrities and communicators to get across the climate change issue is a good thing. i think an impassioned articulate 16 year old is a good example of doing exactly that. i just don't accept that she is adding anything more to the debate than drawing media attention to it (which as you say is in itself a good thing). she's a good headline, but others still need to provide the content.
