Debenhams 12:35 - Apr 9 with 5519 views | StokieBlue | Sadly it looks like it's gone, another one of the national chains to meet it's end in the internet age. Will be a shame for Ipswich town centre as well. Horrible for those losing their jobs but worth noting that Ashley has lost 150m as his shareholding has been wiped out. Not sure many will feel too sorry for him. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2019/apr/09/debenhams-is-taken-over-by-lend SB

Debenhams on 15:52 - Apr 9 by Deano69 | A sign of the times. Went shopping to Mrs Deano's Christmas present with 12 year old Daughter. Saw a coat in Debenhams that might suit, but not in her size. After eventually tracking someone down to see if there were any more 'round the back', I got told 'No' after suggesting they order it in for me (my suggestion not her's) she said 'it's best you sort it online' so using Debenhams Free WiFi while standing in the coat department I order a different coat from another shop as I couldn't find the one I wanted on Debenhams website. The truth is, the majority of retail stores do not employ good sales staff. Quite honestly, the fact that I had bothered to go in store, with intent to buy, should mean its a poor show if I walk out without the goods. That little shopping expedition saw me having to subsequently order 5 presents online later, a further one ordered for pick up when the girl at M&S correctly ordered it all for me and even got it delivered to the most convenient store for picking up from (absolutely the right way to do it) and the only thing I bought in town was a box of chocolates (which quite honestly I could have bought anywhere) Retail as a whole needs to take a long hard look at itself. Did have a nice lunch though |

If you both mean hitting sales targets and customers being harassed into buying, which seems what Deano is suggesting, then I'm glad there aren't. This is Britain, not Marrakesh.

Far from it. I am talking about excellent customer service, understanding the wants and needs of the person wanting to buy and going the extra mile to serve someone who has taken the time to walk in the shop of their own accord and should be treated with respect and humility. Completely the opposite of 'mean hitting sales targets and customers being harassed into buying,' - not sure how on earth you came to that conclusion if you read my post?

It was this quote: ."..the fact that I had bothered to go in store, with intent to buy, should mean its a poor show if I walk out without the goods." Just seemed that way at first glance. Apologies I've misunderstood. With your other point I completely agree. Lots of places don't take training very seriously, which I can understand as it's often such a transient trade. Tell you who I have found to be good is John Lewis. Staff always tend to be knowledgeable about what they're selling there.

The lovely young (early 20's is young to me) in M & S was absolutely spot on, wrong size available, no problem sir I will order it, would you like to pay here at the desk while i'll sort it all for you. Which is the most convenient of our shops to pick up from?' She even managed to make light of getting all my details for their system, something that usually winds me up, and all with a lovely smile and casual manner. Excellent. My only regret was not catching her name and sending in a compliment message to M&S. A rare find indeed. Every other shop I went in to was like torture, grunting staff, unhelpful, made to feel like they were doing me the favour, no real knowledge of what they sell. Poor show... Kick 'em in the shins, double glazing type pressure sales is the pits.

The villagers can thank their lucky stars that Mike Ashley didn't get his hands on it.

Debenhams on 14:37 - Apr 9 by ITFC_Forever | Wash your mouth out. Awful, horrid shop. When the wife and daughters go in there, I wait outside listening to the buskers. |
It is horrendous, the sooner it shuts down the better. I'd rather get the clap then set foot in there. Although saying that you'd probably get the clap just by going into the hell hole.

Debenhams on 15:52 - Apr 10 with 1219 views | J2BLUE | Aside from the job losses, I can't pretend to care. These giant stores which specialise in nothing and are too broad are doomed to fail. Woolworths was the warning shot. It's amazing how few heard the warning and took action. Since then we've lost the Co-op store, Dixons, Bennetts (Martlesham), Hughes Electrical etc. Of course there are some exceptions. You can't get much more specialist than Toys R Us but their pricing and business model was awful. Adapt or die. Argos have gone into Sainsburys. Click and collect is on the rise. John Lewis and Waitrose are using the Ipswich dual store as their model going forward. M&S have realised they can't keep doing what they are doing and are closing stores and focusing on their food. This is just the beginning. No one is going to go in Debenhams. I predict it will stay empty for a decade or so before being completely transformed into some sort of entertainment hub.

Customer Service makes all the difference doesn't it? What can be more important than wanting people to come back and use you again and again - that's the entire point. Following the non existence of Debenhams' CS last week I have encountered 2 great examples of the opposite so far this week. Ordered a TV from AO and it showed up damaged. I phoned to tell them yesterday PM and a replacement showed this morning. No fuss. On the Debenhams' order was some Lands' End labelled items that they couldn't exchange [!] so I called Lands' End directly and they have sorted the issue for me even though it's not their problem. If Debenhams operated like that then they may be doing better.
