One person can't make a difference but... 12:26 - Sep 18 with 14092 viewsmonytowbray

...I found out this morning 1,000 dairy farms closed over 2013-2016 because people are switching off of milk for alternatives.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-36764592

I honestly believe within the next 50-100 years we'll look back as a race on the consumption of cow milk and consider how backwards it was.

I can't believe the vegans killed so many cows. 1,000 dairy farms worth destroyed in three years? Christ, I thought you guys liked animals

If people consume mass produced dairy products and mass produced animal flesh they are slowly poisoning themselves, upthetowen.

I was vegetarian when people would look at you like an alien if you mentioned it, back when "Salad without the chicken" was the only thing on a menu.

Granted, I did go back to meat for a while, but eating meat has never sat well with me since I was 18.

Since you have gone vegan, have you deliberately caved in at any time? I know this probably sounds like a set up for an attack so ignore me if you want but just wondering if you completely lose the craving for meat or whether you have to fight it?

How is milking a cow cruel? Genuine question.

Or is the living conditions / keeping of cows that you view as cruel?

It's because normal farmers are being outcompeted by super dairies (with thousands of cows), which are the only places that can produce milk at the price the supermarkets pay. Hence why the number of dairy cows has actually gone up but the number of farms has dropped hugely. My aunt and uncle were one of the dairies that gave up (they switched to free range chickens).

In this cnntext, the great irony in the OP being pleased about dairy farms closing is that the cows are probably being treated much worse now than they were by normal farmers: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/the-controversial-mega-dairies-t

Exactly, well said.

Milk & dairy production will always continue in some form, not least because it's a hugely important source of calcium which simply cannot in reality be sourced from other foodstuffs in the amounts needed - as I've found to my cost (increasing loss of bone density over the years, and supplements just don't do the job as well as dairy).

That less farms doesn't necessarily mean more cows.

Agree with you on the general trend of milk consumption and rise of alternatives though. Most people buy milk out of habit. If there was a plant milk which didn't taste awful in tea/coffee I would buy it. I must admit I haven't tried oat milk.

Try this, best one currently out there - nothing but 8.8% organic soya beans & water. I think you'll be surprised if you haven't already tasted it. Great in tea, but if you use it in coffee, put the soy milk in the cup first or it'll separate.

Thank you. Sadly soy makes my throat go tight though so unfortunately it's a no go.

I love Koko coconut based milk on cereal but it's not great in tea.

Vegetarianism took off big-time in the 1960s (hippy 60s but you weren't even a twinkle in your parents' eyes then); there was a wonderful small chain (couple of restaurants & handful of shops) called Cranks, which I practically lived in when I was still based in Guildford & London. Their products and meals were wondrous, outstanding, delectable!

There are almond milks out there which source responsibly, eg from Spain - Ecomil is one such manufacturer - there are several UK wholefood online retailers who stock most (but not all) of their range. Unfortunately owing to both Brexit and nanny-state slap down on sweetened items, they no longer have a UK base themselves.

Good informative article tho, thanks.
