Jimmy Armfield has died 10:44 - Jan 22 with 4973 viewsSteve_M

For my generation a very good radio summariser but, more importantly, a very good full back for Blackpool back in the day, he just missed out on the World Cup in 1966 too I believe.

RIP Jimmy.

Can only remember him from the radio, but provided many an interesting insight to the game he was covering for R5.

R.I.P.

He was a very good fullback and a member of the 1966 World Cup squad although George Cohen had the RB spot in the team.He played in the 1962 WC.

I think I have his autograph from about 55 years ago in my collection in my loft.

According to a 5live documentary I heard he would have been skipper if he’d not got injured in one of the warm up games.

it was certainly not cut and dried as Moore was still in the process coming back from his first bout with cancer in the 12 months or so leading up to the finals

This has also brought to my attention that King Of The Kippax doesn't have a website. How the hell do City fans discuss Veganuary and brexit ?

As part of my job I met Jimmy once and asked him if he'd ever played at Portman Road. He said he has bad memories of our ground because it was where he got an injury which prevented him from playing in the 1966 World Cup!

Yes - never saw him play, but he was a fixture on the radio, sitting alongside the likes of Bryon Butler and Peter Jones. A great voice and excellent insight, without being an attention-seeker.

Those were, indeed, the days.

Yes took them to the European Cup Final in the season that started with Brian Clough in charge.

Sad news. I didn’t really know much about Armfield as a player, but listening to his commentary on radio was a real joy - He certainly knew what he was talking about. RIP

Not just a good player and commentator but very nice guy. Sad loss for the game.

Sad to see him go. I saw him play a few times and enjoyed his TV and radio work. I had him down as a really genuine bloke.

Good read thanks.

Love this though 'Leeds were ill used by the referee'

Given the Leeds tactics of the Revie era payback was due.

Bryon Butler and Peter Jones were the pinnacle of great football commentators. Crackly reception whilst listening to the town in some European away fixture. Jimmy Armfield was a superb summariser but I suspect he may not have worked with those two greats. I believe Jimmy was no fan of the self absorbed Alan Green. Not fit to tune in the equipment of Butler and Jones. Not for me.

Heard interviews with a couple of players he managed, & others he worked with, earlier today on R5l. "He never raised his voice or got into arguments" are two comments that stood out.
