TWTD Questionnaire 2022/23

Q5 Favourite ever Town player?

John Wark retains the title he regained from his old mate Kevin Beattie a few years ago with their standings remarkably consistent from last year's 13.3 per cent to 11.3 per cent.

The debate over which one ought to be top will almost certainly continue in pubs and on the TWTD Forum for many years to come. A couple of years ago Kieron Dyer said he believes that “Kevin Beattie is the best player that we've ever had in our long history but I think John Wark is our greatest ever player just because of the longevity of his career and his honours, both with the team and individually”. That seems a fair summary of the situation.

Matt Holland has established himself in third over recent years with his team-mate Marcus Stewart climbing back ahead of Paul Mariner into fourth, the pair having switched places and back again over the last three years.

Arnold Muhren finishes ahead of Frans Thijssen in the battle of the Dutchmen but by a mere three votes.

Everyone in the top 10 comes from the early eighties squad or George Burley's play-off/UEFA Cup qualifying team with the exception of Pablo Couñago and Shefki Kuqi. Clearly Joe Royle's team is remembered very fondly even if they narrowly missed out on promotion.

Of the current squad, who may well find themselves moving into the top ten in years to come, Conor Chaplin perhaps unsurprisingly comes out on top with 32 votes with skipper Sam Morsy second on 22 and Wes Burns on 21 in third.

Nathan Broadhead and Harry Clarke clearly made a big impression in their first four months at the club with 11 and five fans respectively already having them down as their favourite ever Town players.

In the battle of the Davises, there's a draw between Leif and Kelvin, each of them having picked up five votes.

Elsewhere, Bilel Mohsni's five-sub-appearance spell in 2012 is apparently still very fondly remembered by one supporter, while another hasn't forgotten Gilbert Alsop's 24 goals in 24 appearances as Town carried off the Southern League title in 1937/38.
