McKenna: We're Going to Assess One or Two in the Morning

I get annoyed by players who don't train hard, fail to make the squad, and then announce in the media that they're making themselves unavailable.

Although the sponsorship deal mitigates that somewhat.

Scowcroft and Wilnis Inducted Into Hall of Fame
at 22:43:16

"while Wilnis, who stayed at Town for 10 seasons and was the first foreign player to be awarded a testimonial...."

What other foreign players have been awarded a testimonial? I can't think of any others?!

Tommy Smith probably should have been. There's certainly one in our team right now who'll possibly only miss out because he won't complete a decade of service (though I'd be tempted to give him one anyway, if things pan out the way they're looking to).

Keane: I Deserved Sack at Town
at 00:54:09

Stu-boy, I think the player you're referring to was Rory Fallon, who through a quirky twist of fate sets up a rather unusual Ipswich Town trivia question.

What is the connection between former Ipswich Town players Terry Butcher, Mick Mills, Paul Mariner and Tommy Smith?

Fallon drew attention due to his excellent performance in a single game, topped off with a bullet header from a corner that won the match one nil. The game was between New Zealand and Bahrain, and it was the final qualifying match for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Without Fallon that day it's unlikely New Zealand would have made it.

As a twist of fate would have it, New Zealand would be eliminated from that world cup after drawing all three group games. Which means that the four former town players in the question above have all been through a world cup without losing a game. Apart from Smith, the other three obviously never lost with England in 1982. And aside from Butcher who was rested against Kuwait, the other three started every game their nations played.

I would love to see Tommy Smith on Life's a Pitch sometime. He'd sure have plenty to tell us about the Marcus Evans years, and Roy Keane too for that matter. Came through the academy, former player of the year, and scored against Norwich. He could remind Terry Butcher that he was never rested in a world cup either ;).

West Bromwich Albion 2-0 Ipswich Town - Match Report
at 08:11:31

I make this comment with the caveat that I haven't seen a definitive replay yet, and could well be wrong. But I thought the incident where Phillips missed from right in front was caused by a brilliant piece of goalkeeping from Hladky.

It seemed to me that he dived full length at Wallace's cross, getting the merest of fingertips to it. But this was just enough to divert the flight of the ball ever so slightly so that it arrived a smidge behind where Phillips was anticipating. And with the speed of it, he couldn't react in time.

Again, I concede that replays could demonstrate that this was all a figment of my imagination, and I certainly haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else. But I do think the reactions of our keeper are extraordinary. He is a top class operator.

Town Target Celina Return
at 00:55:09

I'd love to see this. An attacking midfielder like Celina is something I think we've been missing.

I notice Sapreet Singh is looking for a loan too. Not in the same class as Celina, but very good nonetheless.

I love we're looking at players who the fans are excited to watch, as well as the hard workers.

Ipswich Town 1-1 Sunderland - Match Report
at 01:40:23

That's twice now in two weeks. What the actual? .......

First Holy fecks around with a clearance against Burton and nearly costs us two points. Then Chambers fecks around with a clearance against Sunderland and does cost us two points.

Kicking the drinks cart is an understandable reaction the first time. But what are you supposed to do when it happens again a week later?

OK Mr Lambert, make it short. Four words short. Gather every single one of the defensive unit together, including any reserves. Fix them with a steady gaze, loaded with enough menace that they understand.

"Don't do that again".

And then we can put it behind us.

I don't want see that again. Not next week, next month, for the rest of the season. Not from professional players who take pride in the level of their abilities and the standards that they perform at. Good work can be so easily undone.

Don't do that again.

Get in Sarpreet Singh and Liberato Cacace!

Although they'd probably both cost more than we can afford after the U-20 World Cup. Which isn't saying much based on our recent history of paying fees.

Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 Ipswich Town - Highlights
at 23:22:51

Yes, this is definitely a "red card offence" and deserves a week's suspension at the very least.

For the referee!

Maybe a month doing reserve matches will sort him out. If the lad wants to remain a professional he's going to have to remove this from his game. I'm sure he puts in the hard yards and can himself up and down the pitch at pace, but tackling is a key component of his job.

At this point he'd be lucky to be trusted with merely holding a flag. Let's hope his boss isn't one of those types who'll still give him a game next week because he's one of his favourites.

Hurst: Proud, Honoured and Very Excited About Challenge Ahead
at 12:06:24

What was that Paul Hurst was saying about chess being boring?

Where did he get that idea?

It can be, if you're trying not to lose. But a good attacking player can certainly rouse the spectators. It pays not to be too reckless though. A bit like football really.

Maybe Paul needs to get Nick Pert on the team in an advisory capacity. He knows a thing or two about attacking play ;).

Smith: We're Quietly Confident We Can Cause Upset
at 19:24:39

I get the feeling that Fallon is in the squad more for motivational reasons that anything else. He's been there and done it before, scoring that bullet header that sent New Zealand to their last world cup in 2010. I can't see him getting onto the pitch. In the dressing room though, well, he's been there and done that. Never let his country down, and knows what is required. A very well liked individual with useful experience.

Patterson however, has a good chance of getting onto the pitch at some point during these ties. I'm far more interested in watching his performance than thinking about Fallon's.

Reid Set for Fallon Talks With Jewell
at 20:32:54

The only problem I can see with Fallon is that some fans object to him being brought in by Keane. Actually I think Keane wasn't that bad a judge of players. I recall his assessment of Priskin differed vastly from many who posted on this board last year. The same goes for a lot of the comments about Delaney at the start of his time here. For that matter I'll be quite interested to see what Jewell makes of Lee Martin.

Fallon may not suit the style that the manager is thinking about, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if he kept him. On merit. He's also shown he has the taste for the fight, and the price will be good value for money.

Another midfielder eh?

Is this the young, creative one from the lower leagues we've been dreaming about then?

Right now I'd prefer Marco Rojas, but that's because he's a joy to watch, and there's a chance that he'd lose all that if he came here. Which he wouldn't anyway, because he's too young and creative etc.
