Biggest fear for PL
at 19:06 5 May 2024

The rules are clear (if not obvious).

Essentially (and I paraphrase a little), where they're dealing with an objective decision such as whether a player was in an offside position, VAR overrules if the ref got it wrong, and it doesn't have to be a clear and obvious error. That's not something that's changed.

Where they're dealing with a subjective decision (such as whether someone denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity, or whether someone played in a dangerous manner), VAR will only overturn if the ref made a clear and obvious error.

In cricket it is ofter trotted out that allowing a third umpire to overturn decisions was "supposed to be for" the obvious clangers, and similar sentiments are expressed in football. But it's not really supported by what the rules actually say.

None of the above means that I like VAR, mind.

I hesitate to bring any negativity at the moment, but...

Cook was certainly more /likeable/ than Lambert, and I'm pleased for him that the Chesterfield job has really worked out. But I'm not sure he was any better a football manager than Lambert (and the win percentages of the two men support that contention).

6 points ahead of Leeds. So in theory we could have lost those three games against Boro, Hull and Coventry and still gone up automatically! :)

Memberships
at 11:20 3 May 2024

I'm not just concerned about away games - I'm concerned about home games too. There's a real possibility that demand for home tickets will be sky high like it is for Huddersfield, and members like me will just never get any tickets because we haven't been to enough matches, and we haven't been to enough matches because we can't get tickets.

I don't have a problem paying the membership money to the club, but it does seem a little bit annoying to do so and then just never be allowed to attend even a home game. Maybe a ballot for home tickets with a guaranteed number of home match tickets during the course of the season is the answer?

Town's salaries
at 11:13 2 May 2024

Brandon Williams, £65,000 per week, "gross" (appropriate).

Status: "reserve". Like a Rioja Reserva, which under Spanish wine rules has to be put away for three years in order that it can mature before anything can be done with it.

The bigger and more mature point is of course that Ashton et al have worked wonders to get the right bods through the door (in the vast majority of cases), and Kieran has worked wonders with good resources, but resources that should never be able to touch the likes of Leicester or Leeds. An incredible achievement, even if we fluff our lines on Saturday, which we won't.

Irrespective of us being in the PL or not

Yes I think if people buy membership and then get sod all for it, that would not be a good look. Especially given the Catch 22 - if you haven't been to a match you don't have eligibility to go to a match...

Yes the end of the game against Southampton did have a sort of season-defining miracle feel to it.

If we fail? I'm still blaming that injury time against Charlton! Lolz.

IF we do go up...What business needs to be done?
at 17:44 1 May 2024

I agree with most of that.

One factor which I think hasn't been discussed a lot is that our recruitment thus far has been very UK-based. Teams which are not loaded (or living like they are) and are trying to be upwardly mobile have succeeded in recent years by having broad based recruitment including some from overseas. It will be interesting to see whether we can get that scouting infrastructure in place quickly enough. Also, integrating players into the ITFC family has been a key part of the Ashton-McKenna approach, and that has been done incredibly. Bringing in players from other leagues who may take more cultural and footballing integration will be a new challenge (but if done right, will pay dividends).

Nice to hear that about Leeds - no fanbase can be universally horrid, and having come down last year, and with 10s of millions of attacking talent, and 90 points ffs you can imagine their frustration.

As for Norwich. Well, we have 93 points and 90 goals. With a game still to go. Do me a favour...

If Naaridge win the playoffs against Southampton, well, that will make next season that bit easier for us, no?

Absolutely. You have to shrug a little bit when he makes a mistake, because he's capable of THAT! I swear, those reactions were so quick that if he were an Olympic sprinter that would be called as a false start!

He may be one who struggles to get game time in the Premier League, but yes, what a shift tonight, and it's right to praise the less glamorous work done in the team as well as the silky skills and deft finishes. He's been so so consistent this season and he's usually overshadowed by the diminutive Egyptian whom we love so much when it comes to fans' praises. So yes, here's to Mass! (not that i'm drinking )

So, what else do we want to happen on Saturday?
at 22:23 30 Apr 2024

My first ever Town game was a 0-1 defeat away at Birmingham in the late 80s. Very disappointing. The terrace seemed pretty empty. How far we've come. I would polish the boots of every Birmingham player if it meant us going up and Norwich staying down.

And if we can make sure that Rutter gets stuck in the concourse at Elland Road, all to the good. Not celebrating, obvs.
