Oh FIFA just **** off
at 17:10 15 May 2024

Exactly. This isn't the NFL.

As a season ticket holder, I assume that if this does go ahead by some miracle that FIFA will be kind enough to recompense me for all my flights and ticket costs as well as accommodation and a food allowance if an Ipswich game is selected to be played in Spain for example?

Thought not.

Welcome to Wrexham - Phil Parkinson
at 17:07 15 May 2024

Having watched the show I've always been curious how much his team talk rants with excessive usage of the f word actually benefit the players? It doesn't exactly seem motivating or carry with it much in terms of gaining any tactical advantage.

Not once have I seen him go up to a single player with any specific guidance (eg delay your run by half a second, watch for the crossfield ball)

If you saw these stats would you think
at 18:00 4 Mar 2024

Genuine question, but what are these 8 deflected goals.

Off the top of my head I can think of...
Broadhead v Sunderland
Ladapo v Cardiff
Taylor v Rotherham
Chaplin v Plymouth
Morsy v Leicester

What are the missing ones??

Unless my eyes are deceiving me I can't see New Zealand (Tommy Smith) in your list.

So unless someone knows otherwise, Sarmiento makes 50!!!

Ndaba
at 15:57 3 Jan 2024

Will have to respectfully disagree on this one.

With Burgess and Baggott gone this leaves us with 3 recognised Centre Backs to cope with 3-4 League matches I think it is until they return. Ndaba has returned from injury and is getting valuable game time and also not in the Centre Back position.

If the rumours are true we would be in for a higher quality of Centre Back anyway so in my opinion he's likely surplus to requirements at Portman Road so let him put himself in the shop window with a view to cashing in come the summer.

The only future I can see him having here is if Leif leaves and we need cover in the left back/left wing back position

The Weirdest Rule To Be Introduced In The History Of Football
at 15:27 3 Jan 2024

I recently discovered about a match which was played about 30 years ago to the day following the initiation of a new “No draw Golden Goal” rule. As the name suggests, it totally backfired and embarrassed the CONCACAF federation which deployed it. When I heard about the circumstances from a friend I thought this was fictional but it transpires was actually true!!

The match itself was a qualification match in the “Shell Carribean Cup” which was a 21 team International tournament. The game itself was a qualification fixture between Granada and Barbados. Will try and explain the game as best I can so bear with me.

So in one of the qualification groups before the main tournament itself, there were 3 teams drawn in the same group (Granada, Barbados and Puerto Rico). Each team played each other once with the top team qualifying and the other 2 teams being eliminated. Going into the game Granada were top of the table with 3 points and a goal difference of +2 whilst Barbados lost their first game 1-0 and sat on zero points and a goal difference of -1. Puerto Rico, having played both their matches sat on 3 points with a goal difference of -1. Therefore Barbados had to win by 2 or more goals in order to qualify for the finals on goal difference otherwise it would have been Granada who qualified.

Now here is the strange part…

The geniuses who set the rules for the tournament determined that in the event of a draw, matches go to extra time to determine a winner. In addition if no goals were scored in extra time the winner would be decided on a penalty shootout.

BUT…

In the event of a goal in extra time. The value of the goal was doubled and the game stopped immediately.

So here’s what happened.

Barbados went into a 2-0 lead and if the result stayed that way would have been good enough for Barbados to qualify for the tournament.
With about 5 minutes to go, Granada pulled one back. Meaning that if the result stayed 2-1 Granada would qualify on goal difference.

Now here is the even stranger part…

Barbados, realising that they needed to score in the final 5 minutes made the decision to intentionally score an own goal. The logic being in the event of a 2-2 draw the game would go to extra time and they could win by scoring the double pointed “Golden Goal” in extra time!!
When Barbados did this, Grenada then twigged that they need to either score in the correct end to win the game 3-2, or alternatively score an own goal to lose 3-2 and still qualify on goal difference.

This led to a frantic last 5 where Grenada attacked both ends and Barbados defended both ends in one of the strangest things ever to be seen on a football pitch. Needless to say the rule was scrapped immediately never to return again!

I can’t believe this actually happened and therefore thought I’d ask if anyone else has any other similar stories as I found this fascinating?.

As for the game itself in case anyone is interested, Barbados did manage to score the golden goal extra time and win 4-2 to qualify for the tournament itself, where they promptly went out in the first group stage.

Today's squad update.....
at 10:44 28 Jun 2023

Absolutely agree with your comments. We certainly need 25 over the course of the season thats not in question.

My remark was simply that to achieve this we need to re-jig what makes up this 25, and for me it will involve selling a couple of midfielders to bring in the strikers which we need.

Humphreys is an interesting one this year. He's a gimme in the sense that he doesn't count towards the 25 man squad but similarly I'll be amazed if he gets a huge amount of game time. I'd like to see him spend a year on loan getting more valuable development playing regular League One football with the option of a recall in January as insurance in the event of injuries and possible suspensions.

Today's squad update.....
at 09:56 28 Jun 2023

It's only when you see the squad written down like this that you realise that we are actually quite overloaded and to bring in the necessary quality we are going to have to ship a few out the door.

It doesn't take a genius to see that we need 1, possibly 2 more strikers as a priority and to make way for this then you are going to have to look into the CM and W/AM category mentioned.

El Miz being the obvious first candidate out the door from this list.

I am curious as to whether Mckenna will look to get another CB in you know, given that Donacien, Leigh and arguably Ball can play that position if needs be.

Pretty much agree with all of this. Though just to add to this list I think that Elkan Baggott will be loaned out for another year to a Div 1 team, possibly Humphreys as well.

I do think that KVY will be released at the end of the season.

Hoping that the George Hirst loan deal comes with an option to buy, and that we sign up Luongo as well.

Assuming all of the above, thats a pretty tasty squad I think this leaves us a CB, a number 10 (TJJ?), possibly another CM and another CF.

Plus any significant improvements that the management team have identified in advance!

I’m a nervous wreck

I'm the same. For the past 3-4 weeks or so I've been calculating permutations and all sorts!

I've always thought that if we remain in 2nd place after the Barnsley game then we should do it. Won't stop me being nervous though.

Interesting one to debate. Are we going for a team that was downright awful?, or just a team of players we didn't like for no real reason??

Assuming the latter, I'm going with a combination of thugs, and those who sponged a living off our good name when they were clearly not fit to wear the shirt:

GK - Marshall

DF - Fish
DF - Santos
DF - Yorwerth
DF - Thatcher

MF - Brekke-Skard
MF - Bowyer
MF - Tanner
MF - Reo-Coker

CF - Chopra
CF - Axeldal

Yep. Pretty much agree with all of this. I'd wrap Davis in cotton wool until Leigh is in contention and as Ahadme is cup tied Tuesday I'd give him 90 on Saturday, assuming he can play FA Cup.

Anyway for the teams. I'll give it a go .

Portsmouth
Hladky
Ajgabe
Fridge
Keogh
KVY
Morsy
Camara
Chirewa
Edwards
Jackson
Ladapo

Buxton
Walton
JD
Wolf
Burgess
Burns
KVY
Camara
Humphreys
Chaplin
Harness
Ahadme

Hopefully we can have a good degree of rotation in there to keep everyone fresh

Personally I think trying to predict tomorrows team is nigh on impossible. With the international call ups, injuries and 2 upcoming games against our rivals in 2nd and 3rd I would imagine we would want to keep as many first teamers away from this as possible.

That said, I'll give it a go:

GK - Hladky
RWB - Edwards
CB - KVY (Only for 45 though as imagine he will start Saturday)
CB - Keogh (c)
CB - Kabongolo
LWB - Hudson
CDM - Ball
CDM - Humphreys (if fit enough)
CAM - Siziba
CAM - Harness (45 mins max) or Chirewa
CF - Ladapo (45 mins max) or if eligible Tommy Hughes

Probably have this hopelessly wrong but there you go!

I'm very much of the opinion McKenna will use the game only to get some game time to those who need it.

In my opinion, this will include Hladky, Burgess, Keogh, Edwards, Ball and Humphreys.

The remainder, as already mentioned likely to include youth players such as Chirewa etc.

Leigh who I thought would start I'm not sure. I guess his involvement will likely depend on how Davis is fixed up after today's game. Aluko I imagine could start as skipper.

Pleased to see John-Jules given a start. Let's hope he makes the most of it!!

Would have liked to have seen Humphreys on the bench as some kind of natural CM cover. But still. COYB!!

Interesting lineup.

In the absence of a Burns, Edwards or KVY I can't see anything other than a flat back 4.

433 with Harness and Jackson either side of Ladapo, with Aluko the more advanced of the midfield 3??
