I've only just realised
at 22:32 29 Apr 2024

There have been two such results in the last month in non-league:

Highgate United won their final match 12-0, having needed a 12 goal improvement in their GD to qualify for the play-offs in the Midland League.

In the Highland League Fraserburgh needed a ~10 goal improvement in their GD to win the title in their final match and won 11-0 (but they also needed Buckie and Brechin to lose, and both won).

Dr Dan Poulter defects to Labour!

I'm not sure it would be a huge shock. The constituency largely overlaps Mid Suffolk district (with the addition of northern Ipswich) and the Greens received a majority (57%) of the vote in the local elections to the district council last year.

Mid-life career jump into teaching...
at 16:59 22 Apr 2024

From my sister's experience, a lot of whether you enjoy it depends on the quality of the headteacher - a bad one can make the place a misery to work at .

Echo the stuff about being a social worker. The stories about neglected/hungry kids was a bit of a shock given she taught in Bury.

Threatened with arrest for being openly Jewish on the streets of London

I didn't say they were part of a counter protest – I was responding to lowhouse's claim that "there was no counter demonstration."

The march in question was on 13 April - see date in this BBC News story:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4n19j892neo

Gideon Falter, chief executive of Campaign Against Antisemitism, had been wearing a kippah skull-cap when he was stopped in the Aldwych area of London and threatened with arrest on 13 April.

Not sure it was quite as portrayed (and there was a counter-demonstration).

I recently read "Aftermath" about the post-WW2 situation in Germany, and the UK was serious about making sure the occupation was inoffensive to the Germans.

IFAB trial to prevent keepers holding onto the ball
at 23:52 16 Apr 2024

TBF, the thread makes a good point that currently the punishment for failing to release the ball in time is an indirect free kick in the area, which is deemed too harsh (too likely to lead to an opposition goal) relative to the severity of the offence.

The main aspect of the proposal is to change the result from an indirect free kick in the area to a corner or throw-in. The interesting bit is that competitions trialling it get to choose which of those two to use (and must use it consistently).

I don't think we can really criticise them for this when rural Suffolk would have voted for a dog turd with a blue rosette on for most of the past century.

However, given the council election results, I wonder if there is a real possibility of the Greens winning Central Suffolk and North Ipswich (they received a majority of the vote in the council elections last year).

I was going to post similar. One of the things that seems to come out of the Brexit referendum is that people on the rightward fringes of politics have realised that there is money to be made out of people gullible enough to believe what they read on social media or in the increasingly lunatic right-wing press.

One question I have is whether she really believes this stuff or is just pandering to the idiots who will give her money. The sad thing is that I think Joey Barton might be clever (but unpleasant) enough to be in the second category, but she may well be in the first.

Biggest defeat whilst playing?
at 20:24 11 Apr 2024

Over 20-0. A mixed team of colleagues played against another organisation who put out an all men's team, who we later found out were a Sunday league team that played together regularly. We were wondering at the time why they had a proper kit...

Keir Starmer has had 4 community notes on Twitter
at 14:53 24 Mar 2024

TBF, from what I've seen over the last few months, community notes are generally pretty fair. Sunk and other Tories regularly have then when they're peddling their nonsense, while more honest politicians and parties rarely get them.

I think I've only ever seen one or two community notes that I thought were a bit harsh, out of the hundreds I've seen since they started using them.

The book was written by Arno Mayer (not Hajo Meyer).

I assume Chorley is referring to this post by GB

Today is Holocaust Memorial Day by GlasgowBlue 9 Mar 12:25
I'm not sure why this thread has been resurrected today after nearly two months, but you should be aware that Hajo Meyer was very unwell. He was a 9/11 truther who believed that Israel did 9/11, and was wheeled out by some pretty unpleasant people as a Jewish beard for their Antisemitic activity.

The label "Holocaust Survivor" doesn't make everything someone does for the next six decades somehow beyond criticism

It's sad to see him being used in death as he was in his later years of life.

edited as I incorrectly attributed a book to Hajo which was written by somebody else.

How many Palestinian lives is sufficient?

Precisely. If Arab countries had respected UN resolution 181 in 1947 and not invaded Israel on the day it became independent, then decades of this could have been avoided.

Spotted a Jonny Williams in the wild last night
at 12:28 13 Mar 2024

Kingstonian's former owners were to blame - they were going to sell the stadium one way or another. At least Wimbledon let Kingstonian play there on a peppercorn rent after they bought it. It's a shame Chelsea didn't continue that arrangement. Also worth noting that Wimbledon also gave Kingstonian around £1m after selling the ground to Chelsea.

Has a team ever had the top goal scorer in the league but still got relegated?
at 13:01 7 Mar 2024

I wondered if it could have happened in 1937/38 – Man City were the highest scorers in the First Division and were relegated, but their top scorer was five goals behind Tommy Lawton.

However, the Guardian has the answer: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/may/26/footballers-winning-the-leagues

(Mick Channon for Southampton in 1973/74)

You've literally done it in that response by claiming that those further to the left give a very good impression of preferring a Tory government.

The idea of NOTA, is that if that option wins, the election has to be re-run (and should be with different candidates).

Unfortunately this is the kind of projection that some (particularly centrist Labour voters/members) like to make about people further to the left - that somehow they would rather the Tories (or someone equally awful) win than Labour. While there might be a tiny number of loudmouths on Twitter saying such nonsense, I'm pretty sure the vast, vast majority of people on the left would prefer Labour to win than the Tories, even if they think the current Labour Party is hugely uninspiring and could be vastly improved with a change of leadership.

While I won't be voting Labour (I am in a safe seat that would only be lost to someone further left), them winning the next GE is the only realistic hope. I just hope they introduce PR for the one after next so people are able to meaningfully vote more with their conscience.

(I think it has become a common issue in recent years that people think Twitter is real life and make judgements about others based on their perception of how people in the same place on the political spectrum behave on Twitter. That and certain celebrities going down Twitter rabbitholes).
