Town Targeting Owls Winger Johnson
Thursday, 18th Jan 2024 11:45

Town have approached Sheffield Wednesday regarding left-sided winger or full-back Marvin Johnson.

The 33-year-old was mentioned in connection with the Blues early in the summer but with the claims dismissed by Town sources.

However, according to the Sheffield Star, Town have made contact with the Owls regarding the Birmingham-born wideman and TWTD understands the Blues are indeed showing interest, although reports of a £1 million offer are wide of the mark.

Johnson started his career in non-league with Solihull Moors, Coleshill Town (loan), Romulus, Kidderminster Harriers and Hednesford Town before making a move to Motherwell in 2015.

Spells with Oxford United, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United (loan) followed before he moved on to the Owls in August 2021 on a free transfer.

A regular in the side which won promotion from League One via the play-offs last season, Johnson is probably best known to Town fans for elbowing Wes Burns in the match between the Blues and Owls at Portman Road in February last year and subsequently receiving a three-game suspension.

Interest in Johnson may indicate that Brandon Williams’s loan from Manchester United is set to be brought to a premature end, the full-back having recently returned to Old Trafford for assessment after illness and injury issues.

I think some of us need to realise just how difficult it is to get hold of the right players, especially in January. We are by no means the only club looking. There is a lot of competition for a limited number of options. I'm sure we are doing the best we can, but we can't expect miracles.

Why are people going on about his age? 33 is not old for a footballer anymore. Can only assume those who think he's too old, think we should get rid of morsy(32), Luongo(31)? Of course not, bcse theyre good players. Johnson would be good cover for Davis, with Williams gone( trust me, he isn't coming back). Is £1m+ too much for him? Maybe, but at todays prices it's not exactly extortionate. That's the January window for you. Prices are often higher than you may want to pay.

Sad to think Williams won't return.

Anyone hear a rumour of him getting arrested?

The Wednesday site is quoting 1.3 million!!! Seems a tad overboard for a 33 year old!

This would be a solid signing for the run in & we have to view it like that. OK, he's 33, so he's not one for the future, but the future of this club is very much dependent on what happens in the immediate present. Mark Ashton said he would leave no stone unturned in the pursuit for promotion, so that he would have no regrets, ahead of the transfer window last season - he very much followed true on that then, & I'm sure he is trying to do the same again now. We badly need cover on the left side NOW & Johnson would be a great addition.
I always go back to Newcastle paying £3m for an aging Daryl Murphy, even though Benitez had no intention of starting him as his #1 centre forward, or indeed having him as a member of his squad upon promotion to the Premier League. But Benitez recognised that Murphy was very effective at Championship level, and also that he brought a quality & experience to his squad that he didn't have in that position. It worked, Murphy came on, played well & scored some important goals when called upon that season; afterwards Newcastle went up, move on & Murphy was transferred to another Championship club. We have to be similarly savvy & ruthless now if we are to get promoted ahead of Southampton and/or Leeds.

This is the problem in the January window, it’s a sellers market.

£1million+ for a 33 year old with six months left on his contract is ridiculous normally but every other club knows we are desperate to reinforce the squad and the already over inflated January prices rise again.

IF such a deal, which would be pretty short term surely, given his age, helps us to the Premiership then it would be money well spent. If not then we will have wasted it. A real 50/50 one this for me.

Maybe Davis is being sold, dreadful thought but you never know Liverpool need a good left back, for one

Davis going nowhere, this would be cover. Is this the bloke who gave Wes Burns an off the ball elbow when they came to PR last year?

Why oh why, would this mean Davis,is being sold. It would be a replacement for Williams as we need cover on the left side in particular.

Age is irrelevant if the signing helps get us to the Premier League.

I don't believe that considering FFP and the fact we are a championship club that we would bid 1 million on a 33 year old who, however good, isnt a week in / out starter. ( he may get in over broady due to form or injury at left wing but he isnt dislodging leif or wes as an inside forward IMO ) It may be true that we have bid for him and for eg, if we get promoted, if he plays 50 games and if he gets 20 assists the fee in total could be 1 million, of course, that is very different however to the headline! Up the farkin towan

Strange signing. I'd rather have Greg Leigh back than Johnson, a cheat and a thug. I wonder what Burns will say to him if he joins. And can he score goals?

Joyousblue. I dont think davis will leave but it is possible for the right money. Hence its possible we could pay a million for this lad. I certainly hope not but it is very possible as davis a super player who is definitely being watched. Only saying.

It is time that clubs had Transfer Terms and Conditions at the beginning of the season and not create a farsical pantomime when dealing in players transfers. Johnson is an average player but age devalues unless the rewards can be gained. The various football governing bodies need to come up with a system where players can be bought and sold with less stress. Fans and players are fed up with the transfer merry go round. Most clubs are in debt. The system is broken. We need a football think tank to solve the game of transfers.

Davis got injured purely because of the amount of football he was having to play in a very physically demanding role. This makes total sense on a short term contract with an option to extend. IWilliams and.Clarke are not and never will be backup for Davis. Next season Johnson could be backup for Davis in the Prem or his replacement in the Championship or released.

ITFCSG What a daft thing to say. Yes, what he did to burns last season was disgraceful. Butchardly makes him a thug, or a cheat. Not as if he has a,record of doing that. As for having Greg Leigh backed? A pointless comment. He's gone. Not an option for us. Johnson is a good, solid player, who'd do a job for us if/when called upon.

blues1 besides the elbow on Burns remember his dive and penalty that basically cheated Derby of a place in the POs last season? I am sure there are other cases that I haven't seen, ask the Sheff Wed fans. And apparently he had a falling out with their previous manager Xisco who removed him from the squad list. If he's on a nominal fee I am not saying anything but £1 million + is just ridiculous
