Town Targeting Owls Winger Johnson
Thursday, 18th Jan 2024 11:45

Town have approached Sheffield Wednesday regarding left-sided winger or full-back Marvin Johnson.

The 33-year-old was mentioned in connection with the Blues early in the summer but with the claims dismissed by Town sources.

However, according to the Sheffield Star, Town have made contact with the Owls regarding the Birmingham-born wideman and TWTD understands the Blues are indeed showing interest, although reports of a £1 million offer are wide of the mark.

Johnson started his career in non-league with Solihull Moors, Coleshill Town (loan), Romulus, Kidderminster Harriers and Hednesford Town before making a move to Motherwell in 2015.

Spells with Oxford United, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United (loan) followed before he moved on to the Owls in August 2021 on a free transfer.

A regular in the side which won promotion from League One via the play-offs last season, Johnson is probably best known to Town fans for elbowing Wes Burns in the match between the Blues and Owls at Portman Road in February last year and subsequently receiving a three-game suspension.

Interest in Johnson may indicate that Brandon Williams’s loan from Manchester United is set to be brought to a premature end, the full-back having recently returned to Old Trafford for assessment after illness and injury issues.

Not sure how much to read into this? He would be good cover for Davis but the only Kobe considering his age would be a loan or way below £1 million as this would be temp cover. I’m more concerned with the lack of positive knees ref two new CFs. Fail to sign at least x1 CF I’m afraid we won’t have the compacity to compete for 2nd spot, this is a CRUCIAL window for us with Hirst out of the rest of the season quite likely.

At 33 a £1m Bid should be wide of the mark...

People need to wake up and smell the coffee 1 million pounds in this day and age is not a massive fee especially in the championship. As for Greg Leigh he's never done it in the championship and rarely played in league one for us and McKenna obviously thought the same. All players should be ambitious and if Davis gets an offer substantially better than what he's got now he would be daft to turn it down it happened in the Robson era unfortunately.

Great move for him if it comes off: from a relegation dogfight to promotion hunt.

Love the way Williams return to Man Utd is reported. Anybody who has their ear to the ground knows the boy has off field issues. We will never see him again in an Ipswich shirt again.

#Linkboy It doesn’t come down to what Davis wants….. Is a club prepared to pay what Ashton would be asking for Davis, now in the winter window. Possibly around the 20m mark.
But the same could be said of all our better players, Chaplin especially in today’s market.
Very different business model to that of the Robson era.

Sorry dint want a cheating thug. How's he going to get on with Burns. Sure that would go down well in the dressing room

As an aside Ipswich fans have to realise 1 million is nothing in terms of a fee. It's almost nominal. I feel sorry for McKenna. Gets given championship rejects and told to make a promotion winning team. Doing a phenomenal job so far.

If we're after a left sided player for cover for Leif, then we should look at Thomas Ouwejan from Schalke...Is 27, can play all down the left side, and is also decent on set plays...probably could get him at a decent price too as Schalke are currently struggling in the Bundesliga 2 , and doesn't have much of a future there apparently...could be a handy squad player.

Johnson was on the bench to-day, but wasn't used.
